Edmund Rice researcher endorsed by NSW Greens

Citing climate change, water and public transport issues as the focus of his concerns, researcher Ben Spies-Butcher is leaving the Edmund Rice Centre to contest the forthcoming NSW state elections on behalf of the Green Party.

The Village Voice reports that the NSW Greens have endorsed 28-year-old Ben Spies-Butcher as their candidate for the Sydney inner-city seat of Heffron in the upcoming State election.

Dr Spies-Butcher was a founding member and past secretary of the Redfern and Waterloo based residents' action group RedWatch, which has kept an eye on the Government's plans to develop the area. He is also an active campaigner for Indigenous rights and reconciliation.

With a doctorate in economics, Dr Spies-Butcher joined The Greens in early 2000 and currently works in research and teaching roles at the University of Sydney, Macquarie University and the Edmund Rice Centre.

He said he is excited to have the opportunity to speak on behalf of residents, and that he is determined to stop them being taken for granted in what he describes as a "safe" Labor seat.

The Greens intend to campaign on a national scale regarding climate change and the water crisis, but Dr Spies-Butcher explains that the party's policies applied to Heffron in the areas of development and public transport, and opposing the expansion of Port Botany.

"We've had a massive underfunding of public transport infrastructure over the last 20 years in NSW," he said.

A spokesperson for the Liberal Party said their candidate for Heffron would be announced "in the next week or two".

Dr Spies-Butcher, who started working with the Edmund Rice Centre in 1998, has an Honours degree in political economy and a PhD in economics, both from the University of Sydney.
