Five Vinnies shops robbed in eight days

Published: January 14, 2009

Thieves have robbed five St Vincent de Paul shops in Perth in the past eight days, leaving a trail of destruction behind them.

Perth Now reports the Victoria Park store is the latest outlet to be hit.

Volunteers arrived at the Albany Highway shop this morning to find the front door's lock broken and the safe raided.

The charity's Wembley store has been targeted twice, with one break-in on Saturday, January 3 and another on last Sunday, causing more than $2,500 worth of damage.

And the Bunbury depot was raided last weekend and the Bassendean store broken into on Sunday, January 4.

St Vincent de Paul spokeswoman Lucinda Ardagh the charity was reeling from the spate of break-ins.

"We're shocked and are left in disbelief that anyone would target a charitable service in the community to steal money and goods,'' Ms Ardagh said.

"The funds that the society raises in the community are to help the disadvantaged and the homeless and such criminal activity diverts funds away from that core work in order to fix the damage that has been caused.

"In addition to the funds, we have extremely dedicated volunteers who donate their time each and every week to keep the service running and these volunteers have been left shaken and bewildered that someone would target their local Vinnies shop.''

  1. Well if we present ourselves these days as a"Business " we must expect that we be seen in this light by the criminal community and treated as a source of income as they would regard any other business. Sorry ,but we are either a Charity or we are not.

  2. Mr Purcell, your kicking of the victim is disgusting. The Vinnies shops enable people in need to retain their dignity by letting them buy what they need at greatly reduced affordable prices rather than being forced to accept "handouts". The workers volunteer for no pay and all money raised further helps the poor, there is no profit in anyone's pocket. Of course it's run as a business because that's the most efficient and effective way to run it.

There was a time when even hardened criminals would not dare rob the St V de P. Unfortunately today some drug-addicted thugs couldn't care less who they rob, and others deliberately target the good works of the Church because of religious bigotry.

  3. I am not unsympathetic Patrick. I can almost hear the SVDP PR machine cranking up.
I do think though it would be a worthwhile line of enquiry to canvass who within the SVDP, anywhere in WA has had a disgruntled client recently, for whatever reason.
