Police call for witnesses over Liverpool church fire

Published: March 06, 2009

Police are appealing for public assistance following a suspicious fire at a Catholic church in Sydney's south-west last night.

About 6.15pm the resident priest left the church, located on the corner of Heathcote Road and Keato Avenue in Hammondville, and walked back to his nearby residence.

Shortly thereafter a parishioner went to the priest's residence and notified him of a fire at the church.

He then alerted emergency services to the blaze, which was extinguished by about 7pm.

The church suffered extensive fire and smoke damage in the blaze and the windows of a kiosk located within the church were smashed.

Nobody was injured in the fire.

Officers attached to Liverpool Local Area Command attended the scene and a crime scene was established.

Anyone who may have witnessed suspicious behaviour in the area at the time or with any information relating the fire, is urged to contact Liverpool Police on 9821 8444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

  1. Pardon me for asking the obvious. But why did the person go and tell the priest that the church was on fire before calling the fire brigade? It would have been much more effective to have called triple zero first. I think the flames and the smoke, then the fire engines' sirens, wold have alerted the priest to the fact that there was a problem.

  2. It would be worthwhile to see if anyone has been selling back to base fire alarm systems in the area. A spate of fires in the Blue Mountains in Public schools a few years back was traced to such a company.
