Kylie a Catholic?

Published: June 15, 2009

Aussie icon Kylie Minogue is reportedly considering becoming a Catholic ahead of her rumoured forthcoming marriage to Spanish model Andres Velencoso.

The 41 year old singer reportedly has her heart set on a traditional church wedding to Spanish model Andres Valencoso, who she has been dating since last November, and is even considering adopting his faith in order to have the ceremony of her dreams, Contact Music reports.

A source said: "She enjoyed the sense of community Andres' family share thanks to their faith. Kylie is so intent on including the traditional aspects of a Catholic Mass that she's thinking of converting."

Kylie and Andres are reportedly planning to tie the knot in Spain at the Parador de Cardona, a 9th century castle on the Costa Brava.

The pair are also keen to throw a second celebration in Australia, near the singer's Melbourne family home.

The source added to Britain's Grazia magazine: "It will be a larger affair in Australia - there will be a few more people invited. But it will still be very private.

"Both Kylie and Andres would prefer a gorgeous, intimate wedding to anything flashy."

The speculation came after the Aussie born pop star was presented with a rose by Velencoso´s parents during her visit to the Costa Brava for St Jordi's Day - the Catalonian equivalent of St Valentine's Day, The Olive Press says.

This tradition is normally reserved for engaged couples, stirring up rumours the couple could be on the verge of tying the knot.

"It was a wonderfully sweet thing to do. It's a nice tradition and, yes, perhaps it meant more than just Jordi's Day," said Kylie.

  1. This borders dangerously close on being celebrity gossip ie that which has no place whatsoever in a Catholic publication.

  2. Oh wow, Kylie as one of "us" Goosebumps and tingling all over the local Church I imagine! This could be a bigger event than WYD08 with copycat conversions all over the country.

I can just see the new Kylie| Hymnbook in parishes" : Loco motion as the gathering song, Step Back in Time for the Psalm, "I could be so lucky" as the new most popular communion hymn.

Oh, and the opportunity for another 'Catholic celebrity" wedding. We haven't seen a decent show since Keith and Nicole.

Kylie is a bit of a gay icon, so she might have to get a new publicist to keep her in line with her new found faith. Perhaps some of the contributors to the discussion on this site could apply for the job.

We won back Nicole and now we could be welcoming Kylie. Who else do you think is out there on the "wanabe catholic" horizon? Please don't let it be George Bush or John Howard.

  3. Is it sufficient that Kylie wants a church wedding, etc? Is this enough for the Church to accept her into the Church? Will they explain to her the commitment she must make? I doubt it!

  4. Come join us Kylie, I'm sure gay and straight Catholics are all jumping dancing with joy for you!

  5. Gloria Healey, what about the commitment 'to love your neighbour as yourself' and 'judge not'?

Jeffrey, lighten up. Wait till she is alleged by the headline "Kylie dedicates her first Gospel dayview to her pesecuted Catholic homosexual sisters, brothers and fans",
then you'll have a gossip.... oh God, help us.

  6. Tony, R, I was thinking the same thoughts & figuring out how to write them.....when I saw your remarks.
    Spot on.

  7. Give her a break.News reports are sketchy. It is a reasonable report. If we saw it in a daily newspaper most of us would read it. We wish her well.

  8. Let us not be uncharitable. As Article 2478 of the Catechism states, "To avoid rash judgement, everyone should be careful to interpret insofar as possible his neighbour's thoughts, words, and deeds in a favourable way...".

  9. Oh beaut. Just what this Catholic site needs. A gay icon to placate the liberals who are always whingeing. Her musical addition to the collected heritage couldn't be any worse than we have suffered for the last 40 years or so. Perhaps she could become a director of music in a cathedral here in Australia somewhere to encourage the kiddies!

  10. It is not my place, nor will I judge Kylie's reported motives on her reasons to convert to Catholicism.

I do however note that several articles published in CathNews on baptized Catholics (and not practicing the faith) having/attending garden weddings, have used words like "scandalous" and suggested ways to reduce the "scandal".

Is converting to have a Church wedding a good or bad thing? Is that better or worse than a lapsed Catholic having a Garden wedding?

You can see how we simple believers can be confused!

  11. Some great comments here.

But I don't think anything or anyone could top what Tony Robertson had to say. LOL!!

  12. I could imagine my parish priest sending Kylie Minogue back home if you ever turned up for Mass immodestly dressed. LOL. And if she had her camp followers ( pun actually intended) turn up at my parish, my PP would relish the opportunity to tell them to clean up their act ( don't pardon that pun either). LOL.
