Malaysian Catholics protest host desecration

Published: July 14, 2009

Two Malaysian Catholics have lodged a police report against the Al Islam magazine over an article in which a Muslim journalist took the holy communion at a Kuala Lumpur parish before taking the wafer from his mouth and photographing it.

Joachim Francis Xavier and Sundhagaran Stanley, from Penang, are asking Catholics to make individual police reports and to express dissatisfaction with the magazine's publisher through telephone calls or faxes, The Nutgraph reports.

"We are resolved not to allow anger to guide our actions and instead pray that these ignorant will be forgiven by Allah," they said.

The two lodged a police report on July8 2009 at the Patani Road police station in Penang over the article "Tinjauan Al Islam Dalam Gereja: Mencari Kesahihan Remaja Murtad" ("Al Islam Investigation in Churches: Seeking Proof of Teen Apostates") which was published in the May 2009 issue of Al Islam. The magazine is published by Utusan Karya Sdn Bhd.

In the article, the Muslim journalist, accompanied by another person, went to two Catholic churches in Kuala Lumpur on an investigative mission to find out if allegations that young Muslims were being converted to Christianity were true, The Nutgraph says.

The journalist, whose byline in the article was Muhd Ridhwan Abdul Jalil, described the holy communion ritual as "upacara makan roti putih" ("white bread eating ceremony") and wrote about how he was given the wafer by the priest. The article also carried a photograph of the wafer with a caption that identified it as the wafer that was placed in his mouth.

Xavier and Stanley in a press statement said they were "outraged that these Muslim men consumed it (the communion) only to spit it out later, have it photographed, and have its image published."

The two Catholics said it was "total disrespect" for what Catholics regard as sacred. "It strikes deeps into our hearts and invokes much anger," they said. Catholics believe that the wafer is the actual flesh of Christ who, according to doctrine, died to remove the sins of people.

Police told The Sun newspaper they were "interviewing witnesses", but have not called in the journalist for questioning.

The report cites Kuala Lumpur Archbishop Murphy Pakiam, in whose diocese the Al Islam magazine journalist said he attended Mass, saying the matter should be left to the police.

  1. It is so sad that even today, such sectarian behaviour still exists; and the Malaysian politicians are just quiet about it, that is not Islamic at all, in fact, not moral at all.
The small group of Muslims doing such shameful things is hurting the larger Malaysian community, and will only cause more division and misunderstanding amongst peoples.
Shame on the UMNO Government and Ruling Coalition’s Christian politicians who are mum about it; if such symbolic provocation were done to the Muslims in Malaysia, there would be a riot!

  2. This is disgraceful - I was under the impression that only militant atheists posted pictures of desecrated Hosts on the internet, yet here the very editors of CathNews do so! Regardless as to who actually committed the desecration, CathNews should have prudently NOT included the said image; rather, a simple title would have sufficed. Neither 'Malyasia Today' nor 'The Sun' included it; instead, they had a picture of the police report or a relevant police officer.

It is extremely hurtful for any faithful Catholic to witness the Blessed Sacrament in such a state and I forcefully ask CathNews to remove the picture immediately.

  3. God will most definitely have his own way with these people. Though it is hard we should pray that they may become better Muslims and more accepting of other faiths.

I would never dream of desecrating a holy object of Islam, and I know that good Catholics and Christians would never do the same. It's a shame that these ignorant people put a bad name to the Muslim faith.

Like Aquino, I request that CATHNEWS TAKE OFF THIS PHOTO IMMEDIATELY - I find it highly offensive.

    Thanks

  4. Aquino and Nathan, the Crucified Jesus is no different to the Host pictures above... it is highly symbolic, not offensive;

Jesus can't be hurt. Those who desecrate the Host however are damaging their own souls - not ours and not anyone else's.

The picture should stay, it should act a constant reminder of what religious fundamentalism and extremism is like, and how it damages the souls of people - Christians or Muslims.

  5. We as Catholics ought to make great reparation to our Saviour, Jesus Christ, for being treated in this horrible way. Is it not enough that Jesus has died on the Cross, that he is maltreated in such a way?
We would be more guilty than the ignorant journalists if we didn't do our best to make reparation.

  6. This is the last straw for me with Cathnews. Whoever the journalist responsible for displaying the image in this article should be making a very clear apology to the readers of Cathnews (most of whom I would consider believe the truth on the eucharist.)
You have one less reader and I pray you clean up your act.

  7. I knew someone would attempt to defend CathNews's decision to include the picture - no surprises that it is the infamous TJ Lawson.

Images of Our Lord’s Crucifixion or the common Pietà do not possess the Real Presence of Christ and thus, should not be understood in the same way that a consecrated Host is. Of course Christ is not ‘harmed’ by desecration or sacrilege but He is angered by it and we should never give licence to such behaviour; tacitly or otherwise. In fact, the unnecessary inclusion of such an image on 'Catholic' websites like CathNews provides all the more impetus for desecration.

Last year, an atheist professor desecrated the Host and placed the pictures on his website. Obviously, this incensed the Catholic blogosphere yet none of the bloggers were insensitive enough to post the pictures. Another had been stealing Hosts desecrating them, and publishing the results on Youtube. After a great deal of pressure from Catholics, the administrators of Youtube took the videos down.

Now, such reactions occurred in spite of these desecrations being, as you termed them, continued representations of the ‘Crucified Christ’. Why? Since Catholics should not be exposed to such wanton disrespect for the Holy Eucharist. Christ did not institute the Eucharist for it to be viciously vandalised two-thousand years following. We have to protect the Eucharist from desecration and in the case that we fail, we must make reparations.

  8. And at 7.50 pm as I post my comment the image is still there.

It is sad that it remains there. It is a source of scandal.

  9. If something is hurting to the faithful ,that is to be removed from Cath, News..Please take off the picture.

  10. 'catholic dad', you're not the only Catholic in this village, nor do you speak for me. Try finding an adult level of theology and spirituality, and begin to act like a real adult with less patronising attitude.

  11. "Catholics believe that the wafer is the actual flesh of Christ ... "

    Well, sort of, anyway.

The "actual flesh" accompanied Christ in His physical resurrection. What is contained under the appearance of a wafer is a "real presence". Christ, together with the other persons in the Trinity, is fully real, though the form of this manifestation is that of a simple wafer. In Communion, we don't "eat God", as the pagans used to think we did, but we join ourselves to God together with all God's faithful, in a very personal yet powerful way, assuming that is our intention. The term "transubstantiation", taken up dogmatically since Trent (1545-63) attempts to convey the magnitude of this so powerful yet intimate act, but, of course, cannot adequately convey the real nature of consecration and communion through theological terminology.

That's my understanding anyway. The Malaysian journalist may have been insensitive and discourteous (can you imagine - a discourteous journo??), but I don't think Christ is diminished in any way by the wafer being spat out by an unbeliever.

  12. It is the last sign of the endtime.
    Repent & convert!
O Jesus ! Have mercy on us.

  13. 'another catholic dad'

How can you label somone 'patronising' when you are guilty of that very same behaviour? Though you're probably one of the types who calls for a multiplicity of voices within the Church, you arrogantly dismiss the opinions of others by suggesting that they are immature.

Additionally, 'catholic dad' did not claim to speak for all Catholic fathers so why do you foolishly chastise him for doing so?

My advise to you: try finding an 'adult level of courtesy and intelligence', then return.

  14. Remember that when Jesus died on the Cross, he died for all to see. In today's modern world the internet is where we see.
Some of us living in countries that are more fortunate are unaware of the persecution our brothers and sisters face around the world. I believe CATHNEWS put this picture up not intending to offend anyone, but to make readers aware this is happening in Malaysia.
Why this picture did not appear in some other major news sources in Malaysia? Simple... big brother would have threatened them and possibly revoked their publishing rights.
I agree that this is the doing of a minority group. Having lived in Malaysia a fair number of years I can assure you that if a Catholic had entered a mosque and done something similar, there would be no forgiveness and big brother would not hesitate to enforce the draconian ISA law. However it seems like this reporter responsible for violating the sanctity of what us Catholics deem sacred will walk scot-free.
In saying that, we Christians are taught to forgive those who trespass against us. Hence I just pray that God will forgive this reporter and make him realise what he has done.

  15. To poppenhouer: The eucharist (wafer) HAVING
been consecrated by the priest IS THE BODY, BLOOD,
SOUL, AND DIVINITY of our Lord Jesus Christ!
Picturing it in this state of desecration is an abomination. May we all ask for forgiveness and pray
retribution for it. It's not a casual picture, it's our Lord.

  16. I am stunned that people are offended that CathNews posted this picture, more than be offended that the picture was taken and used commercially in the first place.
This, from a body of faithful who might have pictorial representation of the Agony in the garden in their homes, or who have watched "The Passion".
CathNews using this image should be no different to us than using a picture of Christ crucified, for that (to me) is the effect of what was done.
I am working with a friend to make our own police report. I think all Catholics who want to make a statement should make it in the most formal and legal way - in a police report. Whether action is taken or not is beside the point.

  17. May God have mercy on those who did this. No one, whatever faith they belong to, has the right to desecrate what another faith considers holy. Such violent acts, and I say violent, because it rips the heart of our Lord, should never be allowed to happen. Let us pray hard that the Lord Jesus gives this journalist the grace of conversion so he will come to believe that Jesus indeed is the Son of God and it is He indeed that dwell within the humble consecrated host. God bless.

  18. It is interesting that when a White Anglo atheist university professor performed a very similar desecration stunt a year ago, CathNews chose NOT to publish his photo of the desecrated Host.

Why the double standard? Does CathNews have some twisted idea that it would be unjustly anti-Muslim if it omitted to help a Muslim insult Christ and Christians?

These diabolical stunts should if nothing else remind us to redouble our efforts to do everything reasonably practicable to ensure that Holy Communion is given only to bona fide Catholics (or Orthodox) in a state of grace.

  19. Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.

  20. http://takemon.wordpress.com/2009/07/26/al-islam-and-catholic-outrage-unmasked/

Perhaps this article needs to be commented on. Whilst there is some degree of balance in the article, it demands a response by all Catholics.

Malaysia's government is tickled pink by this informed though challenging (to us Catholics) blogger.
