Traces of Aramaic on Shroud of Turin

Published: July 29, 2009

As Pope Benedict confirmed his intention to visit the Shroud of Turin next year, French scientist Thierry Castex has revealed that he has found traces of Aramaic on the Shroud.

Pope Benedict confirmed his intention to visit the Shroud of Turin when it goes on public display in Turin's cathedral April 10-May 23, 2010, Catholic News Service reports.

Cardinal Severino Poletto of Turin, papal custodian of the Shroud of Turin, visited the pope on July 26 in Les Combes, Italy, where the pope was spending part of his vacation. The Alpine village is about 137 kilometres from Turin.

The cardinal gave the pope the latest news concerning preparations for next year's public exposition of the shroud and the pope "confirmed his intention to go to Turin for the occasion," said the Vatican spokesman, Fr Federico Lombardi, in a written statement on July 27.

A recent study by French scientist Thierry Castex has revealed that on the shroud are traces of words in Aramaic spelled with Hebrew letters.

A Vatican researcher, Barbara Frale, told Vatican Radio on July 26 that her own studies suggest the letters on the shroud were written more than 1,800 years ago.

She said that in 1978 a Latin professor in Milan noticed Aramaic writing on the shroud and in 1989 scholars discovered Hebrew characters that probably were portions of the phrase "The king of the Jews."

Castex's recent discovery of the word "found" with another word next to it, which still has to be deciphered, "together may mean 'because found' or 'we found'," she said.

What is interesting, she said, is that it recalls a passage in the Gospel of St Luke, "We found this man misleading our people," which was what several Jewish leaders told Pontius Pilate when they asked him to condemn Jesus.

She said it would not be unusual for something to be written on a burial cloth in order to indicate the identity of the deceased.

  1. That is amazing. Too many people try to detract from the Shroud and it keeps "flying" in their faces. It is similar to how God reacts when people dismiss Him.

  2. This is great news and shows yet again that the Shroud is the "Calling card of God!"

  3. Praise God!

I have a large file on the Shroud & the Cloth of Orvieto.

  4. I had the incredibly good luck to visit the Shroud when it was last displayed in Turin Cathedral. My husband and I flews there for one day and queued for 6 hours to have sight of this most moving and never to be forgotten Linen winding sheet of Christ. In the darkened Cathedral people knelt down in awe as they gazed upon its terrible realisation of the sufferings Christ endured for us. The tears ran down my face as I knelt in one minute before being motioned on by the guards. I have never been affected by any painting of human origin. In Veritate, this Shroud speaks of Christ's wonderful Love for us. No further proof is necessary.

  5. There is no TRUTH, except that which Christ Jesus has revealed to the world.

His kingdom, His truth, His mercy is what all those thirsting for God must always be mindful of.

Without Christ Jesus, (All knees will bend at His holy name..), there is NO hope. His is the ONLY truth, there is none higher on earth.

    Matthew 24:35:

"Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will NEVER pass away..."

Pray one "Our Father" as Christ Jesus has taught us, for strength against the evil one. He is real, and he is at war with God and his people.

  6. The "we found" on the shroud and possible remnants of "King of the Jews," could also have been allowed by Roman authorities as a summary of the charges which led to the buried "Man's" "crimes." It is like a final writ for the sentence just carried out. It may be a typical legality for "criminals" but it is simply further proof of the shroud's authenticity. God is providing all the evidence necessary to prove that Our Lord rose from the dead out of this cloth, even though our faith already confirms this.

  7. As a protestant, I hold the same view on the worship of relics held by most of my fellow believers. But the Shroud is an exception. I am convinced by evidence, not by argument, of its authenticity. Perhaps it is the miracle that will unite all Christians in faith and awe of its holy mystery.

  8. Interesting, could you show a photograph with the inscription?

  9. Very interesting. I knew that those "scientists" who said the Shroud was only a few hundred years old were, at best, lying. This is Jesus' gift to His believers and proof that He is the Lord. May God be praised for this!

  10. When is the Catholic hierarchy going to denounce these shams for what they are? ['Not in my lifetime', apparently.]

  11. May God enlighten the people working on this project so that the truth will be revealed and the whole world know that Christ's passion is true and that he truly suffered for mankind........Amen

  12. Praise God. Finally, we are having something to celebrate regarding the shroud after all these years of conspiracy theory and ridicule.

  13. Just to correct a comment here: Catholics don't worship relics, but we do venerate them and there is a significant difference between the two terms. Only God is worshipped. A piece of cloth is not worshipped but, as it would appear to be the burial cloth of Christ, it is most certainly worthy of veneration.

To Greg: The Catholic Church does not require us to believe in the shroud. We are free to or not as we choose. There have been many studies attempting to disprove the shroud. Despite vociferous pronouncements that they have done that, analysis of them reveals them to be flawed. Further, despite 2000 years of scientific advances we are not able to replicate the shroud.

Is the shroud the burial cloth of Christ? I don't know *for certain* -- but I think it just might be.

  14. It is not up to the Catholic "hierachy" to prove or disprove anything. Christian artifacts belong to the world. However, as a Protestant, I have to say that the one thing that we lack is church history. For some reason we seem to believe that the Church began with Martin Luther. It is tragic that we have distanced ourselves from the heritage and the traditions of the Church that also belongs to us. There are miracles and marvels over the centuries that have been lost to us because we choose not to acknowledge them. Ask any Protestant where the bones of St. Peter are located and they do not have a clue. It is amazing how many Christians become excited and marvel that they are in Rome. I have told my family and friends about Lourdes and Fatima. They are all Protestants and they are excited about these miracles. We should all be excited about them. The Shroud belongs to every Christian heart. It transcends our need to be "right" about church doctrine.

  15. Nothing new for the mainstream media: They will cling to the fraudulent radiocarbon dating, the one they will ever consider since it holds the "party line" which is that the Shroud is a medieval fake.
No doubt the last discoveries of Thierry Castex will stay unnoticed like all the previous and numerous clues in favor of authenticity that are making the party line completely obsolete.

  16. I once heard Richard Dawkins say something to the effect of, "many Catholic intellectuals would like the Church to denounce the Shroud among other 'historical evidences' for Christianity." I feel quite badly for those people who, considering themselves above a childlike faith, have renounced the fundamental historical reality of the Christian faith. The Shroud is a shocking piece, considering how it was formed and protected, but maybe the Incarnation is still more shocking.

  17. HOLY SHROUD

    O’ Holy shroud,
    Jesus embraced in your fold.
    Your every fibre,
    Christ's mortal wounds caressed.

    Then . . .
    A flash . . .
    Christ departed!

    Jesus returned to Heaven's embrace.
    Christ image tortured and dead,
Heaven’s gift left in Christ's stead.

    O’ Mysterious, cloth of wonder!
Centuries now past, yet you remain.
    Learned now poke and probe,
    Seeking reason of your being.

    Science ponders your deep secrets,
Who is this image in your fibre?
How is this image in your fibre?
    They seek by reason . . .
    This knowledge in your fibre!

    They seek by reason . . .
Secrets only the soul can see…
A simple reminder of man's evil deed...
God rejected through reason and sin!
    A simple reminder of God’s great promise…
Man is created to rise above death!

  18. Charity please, Chuck and Jacques. The scientists whose experiment (with Vatican permission) found the cloth only 800 years old had (presumably by a chance error) experimented on a small section of cloth which had been almost imperceptibly mended into the Shroud to repair holes caused by a fire from which it had been only just saved. They were probably not deliberately "fraudulent" or "lying".

  19. I have a picture of the holy face of the shroud, and you can see many more details in it then just the face! Veronica and the veil, the tomb, etc. Has anyone else the same picture, with these details??

  20. Sorry, but my only comment is that the type is too small and the colour is too light. Thus I was not able to read the article.

  21. I'm skeptical. Yes, in 1978, Piero Ugolotti and Fr Aldo Marastoni, Professor of Ancient Literature at the Catholic University of Milan, reported that they thought they saw Hebrew and Latin characters in photographs of the Shroud. Their finding has not been replicated by independent observers, which is necessary for a finding to be categorised as scientific. Shroud proponent Mark Guscin concurs that the finding was a result of highly subjective impressions, like looking at a Rorschach blot.

Isn't it interesting, though, how Catholics castigate "scientists" when they say the Shroud is medieval, but applaud scientists who say they see evidence for the Shroud's authenticity. What is it - you accept the scientific method only when it delivers results you like?

  22. St. Theresa of the Child Jesus, also had a deep devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus.
When I gaze on His face from the Shroud of Turin,
I see royalty, I see majesty, I see my King, who so nobly suffered for us.
    Thanks be to God.

  23. Amazing finds. With all of the for-and- against arguments on the shroud, I cannot recall anyone ever, stating very clearly, that the carbon dating done, was I think, not very accurate, considering it had been contaminated with other carbon from the fire damage long ago. So is science, proving it is younger than thought, correct? I'm not a scientist, however I definitely know that carbon is the end result of a fire. And that is common sence to all I presume. With more time positive affirmations will become evident. God bless.

  24. Another Aramaic word translated as "LAMB" has recently been found by Dr. Petrus Soons on a sign around the neck of the Man of the Shroud. To see a video of his presentation go to www.shrouduniversity.com, click on the Ohio State Logo and then search for Dr. Soons' presentation. About 27 minutes into the video, he will discuss this remarkable finding. He has performed recent holographic studies and digital photographic enhancements on Shroud photos from the 1930's.
If the words "King of the Jews" are on the Shroud, they were probably not WRITTEN, but transferred by the powerful atomic force of the resurrection. The sign that was nailed above the cross, and other articles involved in the crucifixion, were probably buried with the body because they had the "life blood" of the victim on them. This was done because of Jewish tradition. To read more on this theory, study the outstanding work of Dr. Alan Whanger from Duke University and his wife Mary.
Jesus Christ gave physical evidence to Thomas when he struggled with belief in the resurrection. I believe He has given our generation proof in the form of the Shroud of Turin.

  25. Once again the Shroud continues to reveal its authenticity to the skeptics. I have followed the Shroud since the 60's and never have I heard of the Aramaic and or Hebrew writing on the Shroud! How many more secrets does this finger print of GOD have?
I recommend The Fabric Of Time to all interested in the latest info on film about the Shroud! GOD bless you all and pay the same power that raised Jesus from the dead, that dwells in your body, quicken your mortal bodies and souls....JB

  26. Interesting article but ow on earth does this prove that Jesus was "Our Lord?" Just because he existed doesn't mean that God is suddenly real. Most people agree that Jesus did exist, but disagree on who he was. This is far from proof. If God existed then he would make himself known in person to everyone. He wouldn't leave notes on shrouds.

  27. Barbara, even other Shroud proponents have problems with Petrus Soons' findings. For example, Stephen Jones has shown that, even if we suppose the marks to which Soons refers are indeed Hebrew letters, they don't spell out any recognisable Hebrew word, let alone the Hebrew word for "lamb".

The Shroud reminds me of the Voynich Manuscript. People become obsessed with the VMS and read all kinds of messages into it. The same thing happens with the Shroud, as attested by the many "finds" of glyphs, flowers, etc, each energetically promoted by its "discoverer" but none found by others.

  28. To AJ and others. I realize that not all researchers agree on what evidence is on the Shroud. What part of Dr. Soons' presentation do you consider untrue? Since you brought up the subject of flowers and other images on the Shroud, I highly recommend the booklet "Flora of the Shroud" by Avinoam Danin. Prof. Danin is a Jewish botanist familiar with plants native to Jerusalem. The prevalence of the thorn plant G. tourtenforni, that he recognizes on the Shroud, can be supported by Frei's earlier pollen studies. Danin also uses the 1930's Enri's photos. Barry Schwortz, late 70's STURP photographer, does not see the same evidence in his photos. Some theorise that the Shroud weave was stretched between the 1930's and the 1970's photographic studies, making the images less clear. I also doubted the presence of other images on the Shroud, but after attending two major international seminars, I am inclined to believe Dr. Whanger's theory of coronal discharge image formation.
The more I study the Shroud, the more I am in awe of its complex details. I do not believe it could have been made by human hands. My response is similar to Thomas'. When Christ gave him physical evidence of the resurrection, he exclaimed, "My Lord and my God!". John 20:28

  29. "What part of Dr. Soons' presentation do you consider untrue?"
The part after, "Hi, I'm Dr Petrus Soons..." ;)
Danin never studied the Shroud. He just looked at Frei's samples - Frei who pronounced the Hitler Diaries genuine. Frei's samples were examined independently after his death and looked very suspicious indeed - very little pollen was found where the tape had touched the Shroud; most of the pollen was found where the tape had not touched the Shroud.

The corona discharge hypothesis originated with Adler. It doesn't explain the lack of oxidisation on the Shroud image's surface, nor the presence of a layer of medieval pigment.

It sounds to me like you've barely studied the Shroud, Barbara.

  30. For those who believe no "proof" is needed:

For those who will not, no "proof" will suffice...

  31. Dear Atheist, I think you’ve missed the point that the image on the shroud is totally unlike any other markings found on any other burial shroud. Despite strenuous efforts, nobody has been able to produce any rational explanation for the image which does not involve whatever mysterious process occurred during the Resurrection. It is the Resurrection which proves Jesus is Lord, and the Shroud is (on the balance of rational probabilities) evidence of the Resurrection.

God created the whole universe out of love, and created Man as a rational being in His own image, to know, love and serve Him, so He reveals Himself to all men and women. Because He respects our free will and our rational minds, He makes it neither too easy, nor too hard, for each man or woman to discover Him and His revelation. You have the means to know Him within your own power.

  32. Scientists have been trying for many years to figure out what the Shroud is. They've shown what it isn't, but they don't know what it is. Their training doesn't allow them to consider that maybe, just maybe, it is what it's claimed to be. Ye of little faith...

  33. I think this is wonderful news. I've always believed that the shroud of turin is real. I read upon it as much as possible, any new news anybody please send to me - you can really call me a shroudie. Thanks, darla

  34. Interesting to say the least. But how can the letters be seen, Magnification, Ultraviolet, Other, and why did it not appear during all the enormous scrutiny?
I believe it to be the Shroud of Jesus, still, such a late announcement makes me sceptical of such a claim.

  35. Also,
Let's not forget the weave Expert who says the Shroud's weave pattern was First century and later fell into disuse. It was an intricate weave pattern and was only use for a short time in and around the First century.FYI

  36. Oh please. I doubt VERY much that some script, as you suggest, necessarily lends any credence to the shroud being the burial cloth of Christ. First of all, his family would have prepared his body and put it in the burial cloth. I doubt they'd call him King of the Jews OR use that belittling phrase. This new "discovery" just leads me to further doubt the cloth. Moreover, why are we obsessing over a relic and a death cloth. Christ LIVES. If he doesn't live in your heart, no cloth is going to save you.

  37. Here we are once again worshipping something other than God. The only and greatest thing Jesus left us with is the truth. Period.
