Humanist group condemn Church over sex abuse to UN

Published: September 24, 2009

UN Human Rights Council

---

The UN Human Rights Council has reportedly published a written statement by the International Humanist and Ethical Union on the role of the Holy See in the child abuse scandals.

The IHEU statement also accused the Church of a failure to honour obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the organisation's website states.

"The Holy See has been heavily implicated for decades in covering up cases of child abuse carried our by its clergy and religious orders, in obstructing justice, and in failing to deal appropriately with abusers," said Roy Brown, IHEU Main Representative at the UN Geneva.

"Yet for too long it has been given a free ride by the international community because of its presumed moral leadership. Our report is the first to bring the issue to the attention of the Council. We shall be referring to our report in the plenary of the Human Rights Council next week."

  1. God bless the Humanist group, may Jesus be their light and their guide, and Mary, help of Christians protect them in helping our church overcome the injustices and oppression of the Catholic people by our institution that is of violence and patriarchy.

  2. This is the reality of The Holy See and it is very sad.
I feel that the Vatican has been nothing like what Jesus wanted and that it has been, and still is, out of touch and arrogant at times.
We must remember that The Holy See is run by mere humans. We must all be honest and accountable and hopefully we can bring the changes our Church desperately needs, because I don't think the Vatican will, it must come
    from the people.
Remember, we are all equal in God's eyes but it seems not in the eyes of the official church.

  3. Individuals in the Church are sinners. In this respect some of them have been grievous sinners, terribly wounding their victims, the Body of Christ, and themselves.

However I suspect that these humanists would like to see the Church banished from the public sphere because doubtless they find very inconvenient its unwavering opposition to abortion, contraception, population control, euthanasia, homosexual unions and all manner of other novel and pernicious practices dressed up as'human rights'.

  4. To censure and condemn the whole catholic Church for the actions of some is unreal.
The issues raised by the IHEU representative are real ones. We need to recall that where some issues occurred prior to the 1970s, when new psychological research started emerging that paedophilia behaviour was not something changeable by removing a person from one situation to another, the decisions made were not suitable; although thanks be to God often alleviated by social sanctions among church laity. Since the sexual revolution and social revolutions of the post 1970s SIN has been euphemised from its individual and social context into 'that's human nature'. Excuses and reasons are not social moral conscience of acceptable standard to provide a sustainable working relation between peoples and environment.
Perhaps the Geneva representative of the IHEU needs to enter into the Church bodies itself in order to get a more realistic picture of all the work being done to ensure Church people and bodies are aware that their state is not sin-free, but constantly working towards overcoming sinfulness in a world more and more embracing the Prince of the Earth rather than the Prince of Peace. St Michael, pray for us!

  5. In case anyone was curious about the objectivity of this group, this is how they describe themselves on their website: " IHEU is the world union of over 100 Humanist, rationalist, secular, ethical culture, atheist and freethought organizations in more than 40 countries. Our mission is to represent and support the global Humanist movement. Our goal is a Humanist world in which human rights are respected and all can live a life of dignity." (http://www.iheu.org/)

So essentially they seek to get rid of all religion...typical they are at the UN.

  6. Plenty of self-righteous accusations, but nil evidence. This farrago of hate-filled sectarian bigotry should be thrown straight in the garbage bin.

  7. The Holy See must be held accountable for the wholly indefensible way it has defended and protected sex offenders. It should not be left up to humanists, Catholics should be more active in pursuing justice for the victims of abuse. If the pope has, even once, obstructed justice or helped an offender relocate, then he is as guilty as the offender themself.

  8. Unfortunately, the Church has proven to be so poor at policing itself that organizations such as the Humanist group just might be the tool Our Lord sees fit to use in the outing of the corruption, secrecy, and cover-up so apparently endemic to the Church hierarchy. Let the light be shone into all dark corners! As Christians, we should not fear the Truth. I will pray that God guides the UN in addressing this very important human rights issue. Praise be to the God of Light and Truth!

  9. Being a currently practising Catholic I can personally
attest to the still practised heavy handedness in the
Church to get anyone who pleads for justice which is merciful, to just sit down, shut up, pray, pay and obey. As for the UN finally calling us to account, all that can be said is it is about time. And that from one who has never been a fan of the UN.

  10. There once was a bird who decided not to fly south for the winter. So he waved good-bye as his flock flew away. Then the cold wind came and he began to shiver. He rethought his decision and began to fly. Too late. He bagan to freeze and he fell from the sky. A cow came along and pooped on him. He began to warm. He made a little igloo and he was so warm and happy he began to sing. A cat heard him singing and dug him out and ate him.
The moral of the story is not everyone who poops on you is your enemy. Not everyone who gets you out of poop is your friend. So if you are warm and happy stay where you are and do not sing about it.

  11. I see no wrong in what they have to say, they're quite right in the matter of telling the truth about our church and our arrogance in exclusively claiming moral authority or superiority, the sex abuse scandals is most telling of the truthful reality, we should heed the truth (from our fellow sisters and brother of humanity- all made in God’s image, remember?) and confront our Catholic ugliness as much as we sing our Catholic praises; we’re only human, God alone is perfect, and the ‘church’ in our ways is the sinful people of God, yet to be judged.

  12. I hear the Pope is visiting the UK..but not Ireland....(a snub to the catholic church in Ire-no doubt), but, does this not indicate that the Protestant faith is more important to the pope contradicting what JP2 once asserted i.e, 'Young people of Eire I LOVE you?

  13. Judy, you should avoid using a cliché like "patriarchy". It betrays your real position.

  14. Can we also have on the agenda the public orphanages too? I know people from my neighbourhood and in athletics clubs when I used to be a runner who told me their prsonal stories about the cruelty and abuse in those State run 'homes'. Some of these poor people have a daily battle with the drink, with depression and feelings of being worthless, relationship problems- yet are all good people.
So can all the Church bashers please also include these State run orphanages too for their moral outrage ?

  15. absolute power corrupts absolutely... this is absolute corruption. It is a crime against humanity that continues and needs to be treated as such, with all the might and compassion of a sensible global community. Power needs to be taken away from the church. The UN may be the only organization to do this - but as we know its hands are tied ....

  16. Dear "a survivor"
You seem to have transposed the words "church" and "UN" in your comment.
