Dan Brown would like to meet Pope

Da Vinci Code author, Dan Brown, says he would like to meet Pope Benedict but has not sought an audience in order not to embarrass the pontiff, an Italian paper says.

Interviewed by La Repubblica to mark the publication in Italy of his latest novel, The Lost Symbol, Mr Brown said even Opus Dei had understood that the Da Vinci Code was "only a novel", The Times Online reports.

Asked it was true he had sought a papal audience, Mr Brown said that to ask to meet the Pope would be impolite and would only "embarrass" the pontiff.

"He might receive me while thinking he should not do so," he said. But if invited to Rome he would "jump on a plane. Certainly there are many things we would not agree on, but that does not matter."

Michael, while I generally agree with your sentiments, in this case I think that the Holy Father would definitely meet with Mr Brown, were in not for the political implications and potential embarrassment as mentioned in the article. Not to dignify his ego but after all it falls to all of us, from the youngest of the laity to the Supreme Pontiff to spread the Gospel always. If the holy father could convince Dan Brown of one of his errors then he has achieved a great thing. If the Pope could convert him, so much more the Glory of God.
    Rather than fall into the trap of undignified comments, however well intentioned, how about we all pray for the conversion of Dan Brown.

  4. The Holy Father is a theological genius and is certainly gifted. Dan Brown will definitely enjoy the Holy Father's wisdom and warmth.

  5. I'm sure lots of people would like to meet the Pope, but I can't imagine a reason why Mr Brown should be at the head of the queue.

  7. It is Dan Brown who should be ashamed and embarrassed to meet a person of such a high calibre intellect. While Dan Brown's trash may only be a novel it is clearly not informed by the Spirit of Christ and His principles. Perhaps this man needs more than just prayer.

  8. In the unlikely event that Dan Brown ever meets the Pontiff, the embarrassment would be entirely Brown's. Brown has claimed dozens of times in the media, in his books and on his own website, that his trashy book is NOT "just a novel" but is full of "facts". The Pontiff, in his extremely polite but firmly honest way, would only need to point out the ludicrous impoossibility of any one of the dozens of Brown's unfactual "facts" to have Brown squirming with embarrassment. Although judging from his words and actions so far, it's possible Brown may not have the capacity to be embarrassed about anything.

  9. I think the meeting (if made possible) would really be of interest... Brown and Ratzinger. I would assume that the Pope does not have any personal grudges against the novelist...
