Hockey "in defence of God"

Published: November 09, 2009

Joe Hockey

---

A decline is happening in the Christian faith from a literal interpretation of the Bible, according to shadow treasurer Joe Hockey. In a speech to the Sydney Institute tonight, he will also urge for religious tolerance and understanding.

"It always perplexes me that so many people worry about Muslim women wearing the hijab when for centuries and even in some places today, Catholic nuns dress in similar attire," said his speech notes, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

One aim of the speech, titled "In Defence of God" is to broaden Mr Hockey's image beyond his portfolio duties, the report said.

Mr Hockey, who was raised a Catholic, will say a literal reading of the testament by church leaders has tangled the Christian faith in a confusion of contradictions.

"One of the reasons why Christian faith has declined in the Western world is because of the reliance placed on a literal reading of the testaments by church leaders," cites The Age from his speech.

"By encouraging literalist analysis of the Bible, many churches have inadvertently invited people to question the validity of a faith that seems to be based on questionable facts or outdated prescription.

"And while debate rages about such matters, the true message of the scriptures - of compassion, justice, equality, dignity, forgiveness, charity and respect for other people - inevitably takes a back seat."

While urging tolerance, Mr Hockey chastises Christians who attack Muslims because of the acts of Islamic terrorists.

"To judge Islam based on the actions of extremists and terrorists would be no different than judging Christianity on the actions of those who have over the centuries committed atrocities in the name of God and Christ."

  1. Best Joe sticks with politics, since it seems religion is out of his league.

  2. Agreed Marcus. Next month: Catholic biblical scholar raised in a Liberal Party home explains how Jesus would vote ALP.
As for Islam, I'll go with a Catholic Jesuit Islamologist thanks http://tiny.cc/5Lg3Z not a pollie who who thinks religious pluralism follows logically from classical tolerance.

  3. I think there's something in what Joe's said. I'd add that while the Catholic Church doesn't go in for Biblical fundamentalism, it does have a similar literalist attitude towards the meaning of 'Church' and 'Tradition' that causes many of its members to 'question the validity' of their Catholic faith.

  4. Fundamentalism/literalism is always a bad thing, as the Catholic Church has tried to teach us for 2,000 years.
A slight exaggeration, however; No one has ever seen a Nun mummified in a Taliban-style Birkha! A wimple & veil is actually quite becoming. Much better than the current 'Turkey necks' we see on those Laity disguised 'Nuns' of today.

  5. Totally agree with Marcus!

  6. Perhaps Stanley Harris should ask some of our older nuns for their opinion on the subject of habit vs birkha. Jesus seems to me to have had quite a bit to say on the problem of judging by appearances and I don't get the idea he sees it as a good idea.

  7. While I can understand and support the basic threads of Joe Hockey's arguements, he does miss out on one very important matter.
And it is one that can only be understood if it is read, in its literal way, in the Bible.
Literalist readings of the Bible are one thing, if literalism becomes a narrow, man-made interpretation of a passage, or, indeed, the whole of the Bible.
But, if a Bible passage, or the whole of the Bible, is read literally, seeking a truth which is within the text because of the desire to know and understand how God wants to be for us, then, it is not literalism that is being sought, but the very things which Joe Hockey says are, literally, the most important qualities for a believer in God - compassion, justice, equality, dignity, forgiveness, charity and respect for other people.
The real literalism to be feared in relation to belief in the Judeo-Christian God, the Jewish and Christian religions and the reading and interpretation of the Bible today is a literalism that forgets the literal treatment in the Bible of sin.
Selfishness instead of compassion; relativism and nihilism instead of justice, equality, dignity, localism instead of forgiveness and charity; and opinionism instead of tenets for the respect of all.
A subjective reading of the Bible is the worst type of literalism.

  8. What makes Joe Hockey an expert on Christianity? He is talking through his hat if he thinks our Catholic bishops and priests read the Bible without deep understanding of Biblical exegesis. Many non-Catholic ministers of religion are able to teach their flocks from a position of strength. It is only ratbag sect leaders who manage to distort the words of the Lord, speaking through his prophets. Why would anyone dream of taking him seriously on this matter? Any educated person understands the Bible is not to be understood in its strictly literal sense, but must rely on an understanding of history and context.

  9. To Margaret McDonald: Someone said once, "He who denies me to man, I will deny to my Father in heaven". Ouch.
Best put the habit back on, girls, and don't start me on priests who don't want to be recognized.
    Peace

  10. Good to see a politician speaking about his faith, nothing wrong with that.
    But let's see more action!
Faith without action is a dead faith!
St Francis of Assisi said "Spread the Gospel, and only if necessary, use words."

  11. The Second Vatican Council constitution "Dei Verbum" speaks on how to understand the Bible, and Benedict XVI states:
"...three essential elements: attention to literary genres; study of the historical context; examination of what is usually called Sitz im Leben" (the life setting).

  12. I wonder what the scribes and Pharisees would say about this?

  13. Also agree with Marcus, and thanks for the link Martin Snigg. An interesting read which highlights the errors in Hockey's quotes about Islam & "tolerance".
Compare this quote "The danger is not Islam in general, but in a certain vision of Islam that does never openly renounce violence and generates terrorism, fanaticism", to this "While urging tolerance, Mr Hockey chastises Christians who attack Muslims because of the acts of Islamic terrorists."
Mr Hockey's attitude is typical of the politicians of the Western world, which is to criticise the criticism of atrocities committed in the name of Islam, rather than the atrocities themselves.

  14. Joe Hockey comments on everything and knows little about everything. He is trying to become leader of the Liberal Party so he has to be seen and heard.

  15. It is great to see a politician pull up other politicians on a trend not so long ago that suggested God takes sides in elections. One Federal MP actually told me personally that the 2004 election win by the Coalition was Biblical. How absurd. If it were so, God clearly changed His mind on 24 November 2007.
Marcus, with respect, religion is not out of anyone's league.

  16. I believe he is right - we have a great deal to learn from the kindness and 'charity - caring love' of our Muslim neighbours. It's time we Catholic Christians defined out faith by our actions of love and our motivation - to be like Christ.
Rather than the evangelical approach of 'conversion or damnation.

  17. There seems to be a long term problem being Christ-like when Moslems are so intent on being Mohammed-like!
War aside, western governments financing polygamy and Islamic children is cultural suicide of the first order.
The big question is "how do we get them to embrace Christianity?" Example is the main way, and if we keep having smaller families and killing off children etc etc, there won't be many of us left to give that example.

  18. It does not seem an appropriate response to go off on a tangent to have a go at another religion - Islam.

  19. I disagree with some of what Joe Hockey says. But I am delighted to see him speaking about religion. Everybody, particularly politicians, can and should speak about religion and his religious beliefs. I strongly disagree with those who claim that only a professional "expert" should talk about religion in public. In particular, every Christian, by virtue of his baptism, has the right and the duty to publicly talk about Christianity.

  20. He just lost my vote. He shows a total lack of understanding of the Islamic agenda

  21. It's amazing how hate speeches like James Knight & E Hall get air-time here in a Catholic forum when it is so offensive in so many ways and nothing Christian about those horrible comments; it is a personal attack, when you have family members, friends who are Muslims, as it is nothing further from the truth, propagating lies, deceit and bearing false witness to one’s neighbour. Let’s not even forget the commandment of our God- Jesus, ‘to love our neighbour as ourselves’.
I suppose their extremist ‘Christian agenda’ is for world dominance and denigration of Islam (if not other religions), is that right? Seeing that Christian majority countries like the US and the UK, not forgetting Australia is sponsoring (The Israeli Military Regime) if not bombing and destroying Muslim communities’ countries around the world. Ignorance and lack of self-examination are such appalling and pathetic condition of bigoted eyes and minds.

  22. Martin; That's probably the funniest thing I've heard all week.
I'm usually a fan of Uncle Joe but on this he has a clear failure of logic. The premises just don't stack up to the conclusion. People are rejecting the faith & interpreting the Bible literally therefore people are rejecting the faith because they are interpreting the Bible literally. Huh? What?

  23. TJ Lawson: Would you please point out which words by E Hall and James Knight are “hate” or “lies” or an “attack” on anyone?
Let’s not even forget the commandment of our God - Jesus, Who gave us His ‘Christian agenda’ for world dominance and denigration of all other religions. Apparently you regard Him as an offensive “extremist”.
