Father Nguyen Van Ly
---
Vietnamese priest Father Nguyen Van Ly, jailed for "anti government activities", suffered a stroke in prison and is partially paralysed, news reports cite his relatives saying.
He is a known human rights campaigner and had urged the government to allow religious freedoms.
Fr Nguyen, 63, suffered a stroke early Sunday and was transferred to Police Hospital 198 in Vietnam's capital, Hanoi, for medical treatment, according to Radio Free Asia.
An officer who identified himself as Major Nam, who was supervising Fr Nguyen in prison, called the priest's relatives to inform them about his health, family members said.
"He's conscious and able to talk," said a nephew, Hoang, who was permitted a visit, but added that the priest had extremely limited motion in his right extremities.
Hoang said his uncle was receiving daily IV drips, shots, and medication and that the head physician at the hospital's coronary department had personally been checking on his progress. He is under the guard of five policemen.
Fr Nguyen was convicted in 2007 for allegedly disseminating anti-government propaganda and sentenced to eight years in prison and five years of house arrest, according to ABC Radio Australia.
