Catholicism does not interfere with my politics: Abbott

Published: November 30, 2009

Tony Abbott

---

Tony Abbott, the only declared Liberal Party leadership challenger to Malcolm Turnbull, says he's a "pragmatic common sense" politician and not a narrow minded conservative, the Sunday Herald Sun reported.

Mr Abbott said he had never let his Catholic faith interfere with his policy decisions and pledged he never would as either leader of the Liberal Party or as Prime Minister, in an interview with the newspaper.

"I want the person who can most effectively bring the party together and lead it to the next election with the best prospects of success," Mr Abbott said.

"I am happy to put myself forward but I don't think I am necessarily God's gift to politics and if it's the judgment of my political peers and of the senior statesmen of our party that Joe (Hockey) is the more unifying figure, I'm happy to defer to that judgment.

"This is not all about me. It's about a change to policy and putting the Liberal Party in the best united state to win the next election."

  1. The teachings of Christ and his Church should always be welcomed into the public arena. Christ the Son of God was also the greatest philosopher, who, according to St Justin Martyr taught "the safest and most perfect philosophy." What should be banned from the public forum are most other philosophies that over recent centuries have advocated hatred, racism, class warfare, forced collectivisation, unfettered economic liberalism/exploitation, murder of the unborn, sexual infidelity, atheism, etc., etc. The latter are the real dangers to human happiness in this world and the next.

  2. Never, in the history of the Liberal party, have three Catholics been possible contenders to lead a dead horse. We're an amazing lot.

  3. Could we have an interview with George Pell about the current chaos? Has anyone ever asked Tony Abbott about his links with Opus Dei?

  4. How tragic that Tony Abbott sees the need to abandon his value system because he's in politics.
"...never let his Catholic faith interfere with his policy decisions and pledged he never would as either leader of the Liberal Party or as Prime Minister...". How could you call yourself Catholic with such a view? Hopefully he's been misreported. It's a bit like the greens admitting that their love for trees have never interfered.
Not quite a betrayal - or is it? Aren't we here to be salt for the earth instead of conforming to it?

  5. ‘Pragmatic common sense’ is “Electoralism”, and it’s not new. it was first used by Gough Whitlam, and all politicians since (it is not poll driven).
Pragmatism is not a quality. Standing on principle, moral rule, or aspect, is a better way.

  6. lets pray for Tony Abbott, that he remains truthful to Christ Jesus so that Australia may return to a moral country guide by truth and love.

  7. Bernard P Ryan: Even if Tony Abbott has links with Opus Dei, so what? Are you going on what the Da Vinci Code says about the organisation, or have you actually met any Opus Dei priests? They do nothing but adhere to Catholic teaching and practice; some in the ancient traditions such as mortification for the sake of souls. We should all practice acts of mortification - if not such obvious physical forms - like self-denial, etc, because, as the Church's teaching on the Communion of Saints tells us, we share in the redemptive suffering of Christ when we deny ourselves various things for the sake of the kingdom.

  8. Anthony: I know them and many of them (like the neocats) offend the very core of my Catholic being.

  9. To TJ Lawson: I know priests and laity of Opus Dei as well. They don't offend me, because they are Catholic to the very core of their being.

  10. Pat: So Australia is an immoral country?

  11. Tony Abbott is one of the best of the bunch as far as Libs go. Another good one is Kevin Andrews. They hold to pro life beliefs compared to Joe Hockey.
However, as they are all Liberals, they subscribe to WorkChoices even if under a new name in the future. This is a big worry because many Australians despite Work ( non) Choices no longer being around still suffer under 'absolute discretion' -ary clauses in work contracts that operate outside of enterprise bargaining agreements.

  12. A "head-kicker" for a political party which in its embrace of the Market blatantly contradicts Catholic justice teaching; very vocal advocate of the injustices and anti-union intent of Workchoices; an advocate of the slaughter in the immoral invasion of Iraq; both complicit and active in the lies that enabled slaughter; a ruthless nastiness displayed time and time again during Parliament Question Time; vocal supporter of the pathological excesses of the so called "Pacific Solution". So much more to choose from. Yeah, I'd say too that Catholicism does not interfere with his politics. What a credit to his Jesuit mentors.
