Pope to meet Irish bishops to discuss abuse report

Published: December 08, 2009

Pope Benedict will be meeting Cardinal Sean Brady, head of the Irish Bishops Conference, and Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin on December 11 for "information and an evaluation" of the country's report on child abuse cover-ups.

The Associated Press reported the Pope wants to be briefed on the "painful" situation in the country following the the Murphy Commission Report.

Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi was cited by Reuters saying the pope and top officials, including the Vatican ambassador to Dublin and top Vatican doctrinal officials, would discuss and evaluate the reports of abuse.

A BBC report said Irish Bishop Donal Murray, who was criticised in the Murphy report, has travelled to Rome where he is expected to offer his resignation to the pontiff.

The Irish state broadcaster RTE said on Monday he had gone to the Vatican but there has been no official comment, BBC News says.

  1. God help the Irish clergy.

  2. I think the Vatican has a lot to answer for and it is a bit late in the day to be having talks on crimes that have been covered for years. The Vatican encouraged the bishops to cover up the abuse and allowed them to move the priests on to his next victim.
All priests found to abuse children should be cut off from the church. Years ago people were excommunicated for all sorts of reasons. Why not the priests? They were supposed to be leading us in our faith, not killing it.
