Idea for an ecumenical catechism: Vatican official

Published: February 09, 2010

Cardinal Walter Kasper

---

A Vatican official has proposed a shared "ecumenical catechism" among Catholics, Anglicans, Lutherans, Methodists and members of Reformed churches, as a fruit of four decades of dialogue.

"We have affirmed our common foundation in Jesus Christ and the Holy Trinity as expressed in our common creed and in the doctrine of the first ecumenical councils," Cardinal Walter Kasper, president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, is quoted saying by the Catholic News Service.

Opening a three-day symposium at the Vatican to brainstorm on the future of ecumenism, Cardinal Kasper said it is essential "to keep alive the memory of our achievements" in dialogue, educate the faithful about how much has been accomplished and prepare a new generation to carry on the work.

He said the members of his council "proposed an ecumenical catechism that would be written in consultation with our partners," but "we do not yet have any idea how such a catechism could be structured and written."

  1. This is great news! Any small step taken towards unity will be blessed by the Father. Let us take another small step and unify the dates of Easter. Let us celebrate Easter every year on the same day. What a great witness this would be for the rest of the world.

  2. The idea of a shared catechism sounds a tad lofty. I highly doubt centuries of theological differences which extend to the heart of how Catholics and other Christian denominations view their faith will be solved through a few meetings. Someone will have to fold at some point.

  3. If it is a common catechism driven on the Creed, it must proceed at once! We must realise that even as we are the Church, we must not discredit believers in Christ who are outside of the Church. This effort will only serve to tell them that this is where they belong. Amen!

  4. I suspect Cardinal Kaspar wants to blur distinctions or have Catholics become more uncertain of the crucial differences between ourselves and others denominations. These denominations are either mutating or self destructing. For example the ARCIC agreed statements frequently represent the beliefs of those on the committees not their groups. This idea of a catechism might be his parting idea as he retires soon.

  5. Again, let us hope in Christ - very simply, this Catechism can reunify these dying mainline denominations and bring them back to the Catholic Church.

  6. Someone mentioned the Creed. I would second that as the starting point. Trouble is many of our sundered brethren won't. Tu es Petrus etc

  7. Since when did Jesus found the Catholic Church as it is today? There is no question of conversion to Catholicism, but a joint approach to what we have in common. A great idea! Cardinal Kaspar deserves our support.

  8. Actually, Peter M, there is every question. I understand that for non-Catholics it must be hard to understand this, but for Catholics, it is radiantly clear: We are home, even if we are far from angelic kids to our parents. We hope that you will one day come home too, and share in our joy.

  9. To begin with, using the Nicene Creed as a 'syllabus' of this ecumenical Catechism will be far more effective because the denominations mentioned by the Cardinal all recite the Creed as an official statement of faith. Whether it is properly believed or not is something we have to address later.

  10. This is a wonderful idea! The Pope is trying to open up dialogue on what the Churches or Faiths have in common. This would be an addition to this and help us to be more respectful of each other.
