The Archdiocese of Sydney has announced a $100,000 grant to Dr Carl Walkley, a researcher at St Vincent's Institute of Medical Research, Melbourne, "to support and foster research on the therapeutic potential of adult stem cells".
Dr Walkley's project is aimed at improving the success of transplanted adult stem cells in regenerating blood formation in patients suffering from blood disorders such as leukaemia and cancer, according to an AAP report in the Sydney Morning Herald.
"This will help with our work in understanding adult stem cells, exactly how they work and what we can do with them," Dr Walkley said in a statement.
"For example we hope to find a way to increase the effectiveness of bone marrow transplants and treat blood disorders."
Cardinal George Pell says clinical applications could follow rapidly if Dr Walkley's research is successful.
"If this is the case, then Dr Walkley's project will make a very significant contribution to medical science," Cardinal Pell said in a statement.
It is the fourth time the Archdiocese of Sydney has awarded a grant to fund adult stem cell research, the report added.
