Church plans more structured pastoral care for Christmas Island

---

A more structured pastoral care for asylum seekers on Christmas Island is being planned by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference.

ACBC delegate for refugee and migrant issues, Bishop Joseph Grech, said the decision was made in response to increasing numbers of boat people being taken to the island.

It follows discussions between Perth archdiocese, which includes Christmas Island, and Catholic refugee assistance bodies including the Jesuit Refugee Service Australia, The Catholic Leader reports.

Australian Catholic Migrant and Refugee Office director Scalabrinian Father Maurizio Pettena will soon be visiting the island to update information on pastoral needs there.

Missionaries of the Sacred Heart priest Fr Jim Carty is on the island having taken over from Perth priest Fr Armando Carandang who had spent five weeks there.

Bishop Grech said Fr Carty, who has more than 20 years' experience working with refugees, would be leaving Christmas Island the week after Easter.

"Obviously a more structured presence is needed to support the pastoral needs of the asylum seekers being detained on the island," Bishop Grech said.

"This is why a roster of priests is being arranged."

  1. Meanwhile, the Catholics living in a number of parishes in the diocese of Sandhurst are without a resident priest.

  2. I certainly hope there will be an invitation for their own spiritual leaders to participate and that we are going in impartially.

  3. I heard a Mercy Sister, Joan Kelleher is heading for Christmas Island next week on a more permanent basis.

  4. Fr Jim Carty is a Marist priest.

  5. Andew Rizzo: are you praying for vocations for Sandhurst?

  6. 'Hidden and unknown' is the Marist motto - we can now add 'forgotten'. Seriously, the need for a comprehensive pastoral plan which involves all faiths and no faiths here is clearly evident. Much of our work (Sr Lizzy Finnerty RSM and at the moment me) involves spending time with the detainees, listening to their stories mostly horrific and providing an independent presence and personal support-the level of trust we receive is exceptional.
Church services are provided for Catholics and any others who wish to attend - an Imam comes for Friday Prayer for the Muslims and the Christian fellowship group meets twice daily. DIAC and SERCO recognise the importance and value of pastoral care and gladly facilitate all faith representatives.
Sadly detaining people who have fled life threatening harsh traumatising situations and whose future is uncertain on a remote island is not the solution. The level of stress and depression for those who are here more than six months is of major concern.

  7. Our lucky country is loosing its identity and the church in its goodness is not recognising the fear many an Australian has. It is stated the costs these illegals pay is round $20,000 Australian to get a boat ride. Spiritual support should always be provided by the church but the financial drain on the Australian economy needs to stop. This does mean that some unpleasant decisions need to be made by the Rudd Government. I hope the good will of the Catholic Church leaves politics out of the equation in its support.

  8. Pastoral Care is about relationships. Carers who are only going to be there short term are of dubious value.

  9. Sure am, Cas. Suggested to our PP we have some Masses for vocations, and a regular petition for vocations in the Prayer of the Faithful at weekend Masses. I was told that was not necessary!

  10. I hope all these people going to the island to work know that the West Australian Working with Children card is required for their work on the island.
