Victorian bishop issues pastoral letter seeking discussion

Published: June 11, 2010

Bishop Christopher Prowse

---

Bishop Christopher Prowse of the regional Victorian Diocese of Sale has released a pastoral letter aimed at promoting discussion on the future directions of the diocese, according to a diocesan media release.

In the letter titled "Finding Home in Jesus", Bishop Christopher Prowse looks at the Catholic vision, pastoral initiatives, the missionary focus of the Church and evangelisation.

The letter concludes with a list of questions which he urges people to discuss over the remainder of the year in preparation for a series of meetings early next year.

These guided discussions will help form a pastoral plan to direct the Diocese of Sale over the next few years.

  1. Great as long as the People of the Diocese know from the outset that the Bishop and only the Bishop can make decisions.
We are using democratic terms in an autocratic system. This is causing unnessary problems.

  2. An excellent start. It is an opportunity for the community to seriously consider their mission. Of course this has been done before but it is worth revisiting. There are no structures in the church to grieve the mistakes and opportunities lost. Most of us just pray and pay and put up and too few priests and bishops have the wherewithall to listen to how we can be affected by even small changes around the place.

  3. David: I think I agree. An autocratic system is not what Jesus intended. In the New Testament there is no suggestion that 'the bishop and only the bishop can make decisions. - Brisbane, Qld.
