Mike Brady, who wrote the famous football songs Up There Cazaly and One Day in September, has launched a song written in honour of Australia's first saint, called In Mary's Hands.

Brady, who was commissioned to write the song and worked closely with the Sisters of St Joseph, the order Mother MacKillop founded, said it had been a lovely experience, reports the Herald Sun.

"Initially it was difficult because I didn't want it to sound like a pop song or a trite piece of jingoism but the more I read about her, the easier it was," Brady said.

"Even if you take the spirituality and religion out of it, she was still an amazing woman."
