Cardinal George Pell

---

Cardinal George Pell is certain Pope John Paul II will become a saint, possibly within five years, according to an AAP report in the Herald Sun.

Cardinal Pell said he believes canonisation is likely to be conferred within three to five years. "This is the penultimate stage; he'll be declared blessed, there'll be a pause - I don't know three years, five years, some period of time, before he's canonised," Cardinal Pell told AAP.

"But he's making pretty good time."

Asked if sainthood was a certainty, he replied: "I would say so, yes." Cardinal Pell said there is widespread support for Pope John Paul's sainthood in Australia and around the world.

  1. The reports in the popular press all included the line that Cardinal Pell spoke as head of the Catholic Church in Australia.
This is not the first time that the media has published this furphy. Cardinal Pell is the Archbishop of Sydney.
The head of the Catholic Church, if such person, exists is probably Jesus Christ if you know your Pauline theology.
Coming in at a close second would be Archbishop Philip Wilson of Adelaide who is also President of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, although I have never heard him describe himself as 'Head' of the Catholic Church in Australia
