Philippine bishops warn against crucifixions

---

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) have warned penitents against crucifying themselves this Holy Week, reports ucanews.com.

At least 20 people are already scheduled to be crucified or nailed to wooden crosses in the province of Pampanga on Good Friday, the report said. The event is expected to draw tens of thousands of tourists.

Archbishop Jose Palma of Cebu, CBCP president, said the Church would rather have people renewing their faith than inflicting pain on themselves.

“While we are trying to discourage these practices we cannot also judge their intention, especially those who have made it as their vow,” the prelate said. “We do not judge and condemn [the practice] but we discourage it."

  1. As the report points out, these crucifixions take place only in the province of Pampanga, and in one small part of that. Pampanga is coextensive with the Archdiocese of San Fernando.
While Good Friday problem looms larger in the hearts of Filipinos than does Easter Sunday, these crucifixions in no way represent the spirituality of the people.
In recent years the media has been giving more attention to them than they deserve. The tourists who flock to them are similar to those who attended freak shows years ago or who think that 'reality' TV is real.
