I am the good shepherd

Published: April 27, 2012

John 10:11-18

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away - and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep.

I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. 16I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. 17

  1. The call to celibacy

To be called by God to the priesthood, to serve the community in God's scheme, is a high calling generally accepted by humanity. Higher perhaps than politics, higher than poetry, for the calling howls for absolute faith and trust, in God and in the people the priest serves, writes B. F. Moloney in Eureka Street.

  2. Ten major faith struggles of our age

Sometimes the simple act of naming something can be immensely helpful. Before we can put a name on something we stand more helpless before its effects, not really knowing what's happening to us, writes Ron Rolheiser.

  3. Catholics are too quick to take offence

Can you say anything about the Catholic faith without other Catholics taking offence? No matter how benign, no comment on the web about Catholicism goes unchallenged. Moreover, the idea of trying to understand a person by reading carefully what they're actually saying, or giving them the benefit of the doubt, is fading quickly from Catholic discourse, writes Rev James Martin, SJ in The Huffington Post.

  4. End Boxing Day trading, Slipper should stand down

Sydney Archdiocese has joined a campaign to end Boxing Day trading while ACU Professor of Public Policy says that Peter Slipper should step down as Speaker of the House of Representatives.
