The federal government has confirmed weeks of speculation that long-term NSW Labor lawyer John McCarthy, QC, will be Australia's next ambassador to the Holy See, according to an AAP report The Sydney Morning Herald.
Mr McCarthy is expected to take up the position in September, replacing the former deputy prime minister, Tim Fischer, who left the job in January.
Mr McCarthy is an old friend of Senator Bob Carr. Their friendship extends back to their student days.
Announcing the appointment, Ms Gillard and Senator Carr said Mr McCarthy had been actively involved in public and church affairs for decades.
Born in the NSW town of Parkes in 1947, Mr McCarthy is a devout Catholic with a son in the priesthood.
