A Catholic priest shook his head and his family wept on Wednesday as a jury found him guilty of multiple child sex offences, reports The Newcastle Herald.
A Sydney District Court jury took nearly two days to find the priest guilty of all 23 counts of indecent or sexual assault against young boys in the 1980s and early 1990s.
The priest, who cannot be named for legal reasons, shook his head in denial until he was led from the court for his first night in jail.
His parents and sisters, who had attended every day of the five-week trial, left the court in tears.
A man who was closely associated with the case was also in tears yesterday as he praised the efforts of investigating police. "I think the police have done an absolutely fantastic job and they deserve to be congratulated for it."
