About 250 people of the Parish of Mary MacKillop congregated at St Joseph's parish at Rockdale in Sydney's south last Monday for the unveiling of a commissioned statue of the Catholic saint, reports The St George and Sutherland Leader.
NSW Governor Marie Bashir attended the event, which was to celebrate the canonisation of Mary MacKillop in 2010 and the merger of the parishes of St Francis Xavier's at Arncliffe and St Joseph's at Rockdale in 2008.
Father Brendan Quirk said it was also significant that St Joseph's Parish celebrated its 120-year anniversary this year and it was 100 years since the Sisters of St Joseph were linked and living in the parish.
Father Quirk said the installation of sculptures at each of the parish's churches, one last year at Arncliffe, would reinforce the spirituality of Mary MacKillop's canonisation for Catholics.
The sculpture unveiled at Rockdale on Monday was by sculptor Margo Hoekstra of the Tom Bass Sculpture Studio School, who visited the site and researched the project in consultation with parishioners.
