The President of Panama, Ricard Martinelli, has promised to build the world's tallest statue of the Virgin Mary, reports The Tablet.

The statue of Santa Maria la Antigua, due to be unveiled in Panama City next year to mark the creation of the first South American diocese by Pope Leo X on September 9, 1513, will reach a height of 100m, "taller than the Statue of Liberty", the President declared.

President Martinelli said: "It will be an icon of this city for the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the South Sea and for the first Catholic church on land."

The President said that both public and private funds would be used to finance the project.

  1. Unless the Virgin Mary will hold the baby Jesus in her arms, it will be useless and stupid!

  2. For goodness sake, use the money to provide for the needy around us - the homeless and those who go without food and proper clothing.
No wonder we as the Catholic Church are criticised when good money is used in such a ridiculous way.
Let us draw attention to ourselves for the works of charity that Jesus has called us to perform.
I feel sure that neither Jesus or Mary would appreciate or agree to this ridiculous extravagance if that is what it could be called.

  3. Helen, your arguments sound familiar...
'Mary therefore took a pound of ointment of right spikenard, of great price, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. Then one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, he that was about to betray him, said: Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? Now he said this, not because he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and having the purse, carried the things that were put therein. Jesus therefore said: Let her alone, that she may keep it against the day of my burial.'
    John 12: 3-7

  4. Peter M: Let's not forget that those arms don't just encompass her Son, but the whole of humanity!
As for it being a waste of money, Helen, I'm sure they said the same about the statue of Jesus in Rio. I suspect that iconic figure has contributed to a least a few tourist dollars going to provide food and proper clothing (and probably some improper clothing around carnival time too!) for the citizens of that fair city.

  5. Did not Our Lord also say that the poor will always be there and that this woman was doing something important?
I agree,Paul, that Mary was given to us by her Son as he struggled to breathe in the last few moments of His Crucifixion.
