Israel stands by appointment of Archbishop Lazzarotto

The Israeli Foreign Ministry has issued a sharp denial to an editorial published by a popular Israeli newspaper which called the appointment of Archbishop Giuseppe Lazzarotto, the new Papal Nuncio to Israel “an embarrassment and humiliation for Israel”, reports The Vatican Insider.

The article also labelled the appointment a “slap in Israel’s face which … underscores the strained relations between the Holy See and the Jewish State”.

"Lazzarotto was linked to the pedophile priests scandal that rocked the Irish Catholic Church in 2005,” wrote the editorial in Yediot Aharonot.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry’s Deputy Spokesperson told Vatican Insider that “the State of Israel and the Holy See have good relations which are founded on mutual trust".
