Christian leaders call for protection of Marriage Act

Published: September 09, 2012

With Parliamentary debate on marriage resuming today in Canberra, 19 of Australia’s denominational leaders and 267 other church leaders have signed a joint statement calling for the Marriage Act to remain unchanged, reports The International News Magazine.

There are four bills to change the definition of marriage before the Parliament, two of which are expected to be voted on in coming weeks.

The statement, signed by Cardinal Pell among other Christian leaders, says: “Marriage is the lifelong commitment and faithful union of one man and one woman. As such, marriage is the natural basis of the family because it secures the relationship between biological parents and their children.

"Marriage is the lifelong commitment and faithful union of one man and one woman. As such, marriage is the natural basis of the family because it secures the relationship between biological parents and their children."

We call on Parliament to protect this definition of marriage in Australian law, and not change the meaning of marriage by adding to it different kinds of relationships, the statement adds.

  1. The trouble with the statement is that is out of touch with what constitutes marriages theses days.
I am sure all couples enter into a marriage with the intention of it being a life long relationship but the cold hard reality of a marriage succeeding today is far from the ideal; the contention of the bishop's statement.
How can they say that marriage is the 'natural basis of the family because it secures the relationship between biological parents'?
Marriage doesn't secure a relationship. It may help but, given the divorce rate, to make such a statement is fanciful.

  2. I am heartned by the inter denominational response to same sex marriage, and I agree with the reasons given.
I do question however, the motives of Jeff Kevin in his statements regarding the security of marriage.
If this is the case why then do same sex people wish to have access to marriage?
It would appear to me that their (same sex) only reason for this attempt at marriage equality is to attempt to
normalise same sex relationships. It can never do that for them.

  3. Jeff: In order to get marriage 'back in touch with what constiutes marriage these days', do you suggest we change the vow 'till death do us part' into 'till you or I happen to fancy somebody else'?

  4. The notion that we should abandon the traditional meaning of marriage because divorce is commonplace or because society has “changed” is in my opinion misguided.
We as Christians need to promote the selfless kind of love that our Lord taught and not give in to the selfish and self-absorbed kind of love that abounds in today’s secular society and hence creates an environment where divorce is so prevalent.
The protection of marriage so that it is an institution where the biological parents come together to create a loving environment to nurture and bring up their children is worthwhile. It is a credit to our Christian leaders for uniting as one voice behind this important cause.
