Vatican II only 'half realised', says cardinal

Published: October 07, 2012

Many of the impulses of the Second Vatican Council - such as episcopal collegiality and the co-responsibility of the laity - have "only been half-heartedly realised up till now", a senior cardinal has said, reports The Tablet.

Cardinal Walter Kasper, 79, who for nine years worked in the Vatican heading the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, warned that Roman centralism had increased since the Council.

In a lengthy article in the daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung to mark the 50th anniversary of Vatican II, the cardinal said the Council still offered "riches" that had yet to be discovered by the Church.

  1. While there are riches still to be discovered from Vatican II the Vatican is not remotely interested in discovering them, not only that it will do all in its power to stop anyone else from discovering them.
In fact in another generation Vatican II will be but a memory and the pre-Vatican church will continue on its way to becoming totally out of touch with, and irrelevant to, the modern world.

  2. Three cheers for Cardinal Kasper for speaking out fearlessly about Vatican II and its unfulfilled promises. May he long continue to speak the truth! I hope to live long enough to see the Curia reformed and witness the collegiality of bishops become a reality and to experience real consultation of the laity. However, I probably should not hold my breath!

  3. Many pre Vatican II treasures need to be rediscovered and re-implemented. Vatican II robbed the church of our wonderful traditions.
God bless Benedict XVI for moving back to a more traditional form of worship and I pray that he has many more years to implement changes.
