CatholicCare’s program that includes finding jobs for people with mental health problems is expanding its role in Sydney, reports The Catholic Weekly
The Disability Employment Services Provider is Direct Employment, a division of CatholicCare which launched the program two years ago, contracted and funded by the Common-wealth Government, to help people with disabilities of any sort to find employment.
The Direct Employment area manager, Chrissy Potamianos, said it was a challenging and specialised field.
“We are proud of results so far certainly, in this case, to the benefit of people with mental health issues, particularly with 190 disabled now employed and in some areas of Sydney where the unemployment rate is double that of the national average,” she said.
“Our job is purely vocational, providing guidance and support. Of course, we work in conjunction with clinicians. It is they who recommend a person is potentially ready to go to work, or Centrelink’s disabilities section might refer someone to us. Our task then is to find them a job … and we strive to provide a high quality service."
