What motivates you? What causes you to continue to serve God’s children? What makes you say “yes” to Jesus Christ in good times and in bad? For the widow in the Gospel, one can only imagine that love is what moved her to such generosity. As for the scribes that Jesus mentions? Well, let’s just say their motivation is portrayed as “questionable.”
Pedro Arrupe, sj, the superior general of the Society of Jesus from 1965 to 1983, spoke of motivation this way: “Nothing is more practical than finding God, that is, than falling in love in a quite absolute final way. What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything.
It will decide what will get you out of bed in the morning, what you do with your evenings, how you spend your weekends, what you read, who you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitude. Fall in love, stay in love, and it will decide everything.”
