Even though he hasn't sent a single tweet yet, Pope Benedict had more than half a million Twitter followers in eight languages on Tuesday, the day after the Vatican unveiled his handle: @Pontifex, accordin g to a Reuters reports on Yahoo7.
They included people ranging from the simple Roman Catholic faithful to a Jewish head of state.
The Tablet reported that the Pope's personal Twitter account has attracted more than 150,000 followers in just a few hours, including 10,000 followers in under one hour.
The account @Pontifex will go live on December 12, the Vatican said yesterday.
The Pope's account "follows" seven others - the German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, French and Arabic versions of his own account.
The Vatican invited people to send in questions for the Pope, whose first series of tweets will take the form of a question-and-answer session.
