Priests wait to learn fate over ear-biting fight

Father Thomas Henry Byrne outside the Perth Magistrate's Court

---

The case against an 80-year-old retired priest who allegedly bit an ear off another elderly clergyman over a parking bay has been adjourned until next month, reports news.com.au.

Father Thomas Henry Byrne appeared at Perth Magistrate’s Court on Friday morning charged with grievous bodily harm over the incident on November 9.

His lawyer Seamus Rafferty asked the court for an adjournment as they were seeking a copy of the medical report of Father Thomas Joseph Cameron Smith’s injuries.

Father Smith, 81, required surgery to rattach his ear after the scuffle which took place outside their block of units in the Perth suburb of Dianella.

Mr Rafferty said he wanted the time to also allow for his client to see a consultant psychiatrist and that he was seeking a copy of the police interview.

  1. Unbelievable. No wonder people are losing respect for the clergy and the church. You never hear of our religious women in trouble, so my argument for women having more say in our church is once again supported.

  2. Just the sort of publicity the Church ... and Perth's recently appointed Archbishop... don't need. Another very poor reflection upon our clergy.
