Charges downgraded against priest over ear-biting

An 80-year-old Catholic priest accused of biting the ear off another priest has had a charge of grievous bodily harm against him downgraded, the ABC reports.

Thomas Byrne (pictured) allegedly bit off 81-year-old Thomas Smith's ear during a fight over a car parking bay at the priest's unit complex in Dianella, a suburb of Perth, last year.

The prosecution downgraded the grievous bodily harm charge in the Perth Magistrate's Court yesterday in light of medical advice.
