St Mary is our second patron, says Vatican decree

Published: January 30, 2013

A formal decree approving St Mary of the Cross MacKillop as second patron of Australia has been received by the president of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, Archbishop Denis Hart, reports The Catholic Weekly.

The Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, Cardinal Cañizares Llovera, issued the decree on January 15 in response to a request from Archbishop Hart and the Bishops Conference.

While many Catholics in Australia already consider St Mary MacKillop as a patroness in this country, the formal process was initiated by the Australian bishops who expressed the wish of the people of Australia for a further official recognition of Australia’s first saint.

Archbishop Hart expressed his delight that the process has led to the confirmation of Mary MacKillop’s great example.

“In many ways, the process of officially naming her as a second patron was simply confirming what Australian Catholics already see, that the example and vision of Mary MacKillop is our modus operandi as a Church, particularly in our service of the poor and marginalised, and our commitment to Catholic education. This confirmation from the Holy See is most welcome”, he said.

The Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart, the order founded by St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, and all those associated expressed their delight and gratitude for the decree.

Sr Anne Derwin, congregational leader of the Sisters of St Joseph, said that this was another important honour for Australia’s first saint.

  1. Two women patrons of Australia. What about our Bishops as a next step now standing up for women's rights to ministry in the church of Australia? It could be a World-First!

  2. Does this make Mother Mary of the Cross our third patron?
The great Jesuit missionary St Francis Xavier was always described in Australian church circles at least as a patron because he ventured far afield in Asia in areas reasonably close to Australia.
We sought his intercession with Our Lady Help of Christians.

  3. I wonder why did our Australian Bishops need to ask a committee in at foreign country (The Vatican) before they felt they could delcare St Mary as our patron!
Surely our leaders don't have to seek permission from Rome.

  5. Just dump Therese of Lisieux; she is irrelevant. If we need another female patreon, why not Big T (of Avila)?

  7. St Francis Xavier is patron of mission countries, (as I think is St Treesa of the Child Jesus).
When Australia ceased to be a mission country, we were left with Mary Help of Christians as sole patron saint. She was declared patron by the First Provincial Synod.

  8. Australia no longer a mission country? That's a bit premature.
The missionaries are now from Africa, the Indian subcontinent, Vietnam and the Philippines.
