Featured website - Ethica Accessories

Published: March 20, 2013

Ethica Accessories is a not-for-profit organisation, founded by the Sisters of St Joseph, which specialises in quality fair trade products from Peru.

The Sisters have established four groups around Peru that make products for the Ethica Accessories range: they are located in Lima, Pitumarca and Tarma. The women receive cash-in-hand payment for their product as soon as it is completed, and many of them spend it on food, as this is their most immediate need.

It is also often spent on medicine, medical fees and school supplies. The project gives women the chance to develop their skills and abilities, which in turn improves their confidence and opens doors to other opportunities and empowerment.

  1. Outsiders provide reminder of the essence of harmony

Last July I spent a month in India co-ordinating a photojournalism training program for children in two orphanages. I assisted the children in visually documenting stories that were important to them. Whilst working with the children on their projects, what stood out was the way that faith was so entwined in the children’s lives, writes Ashleigh Green in The Good Oil.

Faith Doing Justice is run by the Australian Jesuits. In the Australian Province today they are joined in their mission of service to faith, and the promotion of the justice which faith demands, by women and men who share this vision. This website has links to its varied works.

  3. Goddess

Comedian Magda Szubanski makes a star appearance in Goddess, an Australian musical-comedy based on Joanna Weinberg's one-woman show, “Sink Songs”.

  4. Pope Francis and the model of a maximum Pope

Whatever the new Pope's own priorities might be, some things are fundamental to the success of a pontificate. First among these is the position of the office of the papacy itself. The main example of what a Pope should be was provided by John Paul II. With his personal charisma, extensive travels, and media savvy, John Paul II largely inflated the role of the Pope from first among equals to the church's maximum leader, writes Chris McGillion in The Sydney Morning Herald.

  5. From hardship to hope, Catholic nuns keep the faith

The number of Catholic nuns in Australia is declining but of those choosing to enter religious life, a growing number are from multi-ethnic backgrounds. Sister Clare Dang had never met a nun before she decided to become one. Slightly built and extroverted, Vietnamese-born Dang was still in high school when she found the number of a convent in a magazine, and made the call, reports SBS.
