Catholics teachers warned not to strike

Published: February 20, 2008

Victorian Catholic school students face chaotic disruption as teachers plan industrial action over wage increases.

However, Church authorities have urged teachers not to take part in a planned strike on March 7.

The Age reports both the Catholic and state school systems are planning further industrial action in the coming weeks.

Catholic teachers, whose own push for a pay rise depends on what their public school counterparts get, have decided to strike alongside them.

Catholic students and their families can expect to see thousands of their teachers walking off the job for a rally at Dallas Brooks Hall on March 7, followed by a march leading to State Parliament.

In a letter sent to schools from Catholic Education Office director Stephen Elder, he warns teachers that taking part in industrial action could be illegal and detrimental to students.

But the Victorian Independent Education Union (VIEU) say the "standoff" is a fight for the future of the profession.

"Under the Brumby government we start this year off as the lowest paid teachers in the country and earning some 15 per cent below our NSW counterparts."

  1. I would have thought Mr Elder would have been more in tune with the Gospel values he is supposed to be upholding. What about natural justice for teachers, why should they earn so little?
Perhaps Mr Elder might like to examine his salary against theirs and then explain why they have no right to strike. Then again, that is what one would expect from a member of the Bolte family.

  2. If we are talking of a national curriculam we should be talking about a national pay scale covering all States and territories.

  3. I am not a teacher. I believe the teaching profession is undervalued and underpaid. It is only ever desperation that leads the teaching profession to strike. I cannot believe Stephen Elder's stance on the strike. He should be in support of his teachers and stand up for a fair go for all. Threats do nothing to me than to lower the respect of the person making the threat. I have five children attending Catholic schools my family and I will not be thrown into chaos on the day. Let all us parents get behind our teachers and support them 100 % as they strive for a fair go and decent pay and working conditions.
