CDF upholds US schism excommunications

Published: May 29, 2008

The Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has confirmed the excommunications of six members of a Missouri parish board who refused to turn over Church property to the archdiocese.

St Louis Today reports the Holy See has upheld St Louis Archbishop Raymond Burke's 2005 declaration of excommunication of the Stanislaus Six, the six lay members of the St. Stanislaus Kostka Church board who refused to turn over Church assets to the archdiocese.

The board members were declared excommunicated after they hired a priest, Fr Marek Bozek , who had been suspended by his own bishop in the diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau.

Bozek, who was made a member of the St Stanislas' board, was also declared excommunicated by Burke, and the rejection of the board's appeal also includes his excommunication, according to the archdiocese.

The CDF rejected the board's appeal of the excommunications in a decree dated May 15, 2008.

"It is evident that the Board Members have committed the delict of schism by constituting St Stanislaus Kostka Parish as an independent entity capable of appointing its own clergy apart from the hierarchy of the Church," the decree noted.

"In a gradual process the parish has been removed from the jurisdiction of the local Ordinary," the Congregation's prefect, Cardinal William Levada continued.

"This can be seen as an expression of the refusal of the members of the Board to subject themselves to the lawfully constituted Ecclesiastical authority."

Schism, the canoncial offense that triggered the excommunications, is defined in the Catechism and the Code of Canon law as "the refusal of submission to the Roman Pontiff or of communion with the members of the Church subject to him."

The board members were given 30 days to appeal the Vatican's ruling.

  1. It's a sad day in the Catholic Church today, when the CDF compromises the faith of true believers in Christ over political reasons. Christ sent forth His church to bring ALL unto Him and through Him to our Father.

Material problems require material solutions. Spiritual Problems Require the Love and Mercy sagacity of Christ. Not oppressive and spiritually revolting solutions. Take their church power and control from them BUT never ever stand between them and God. That path to God must always remain open.

Excommunication is the WRONG answer for this problem. Conflict resolution and mediation between the Church and arbiter where excommunication is NOT AN OPTION would be a much better way to deal with it in my opinion.

My heart and my prayers go out to those who are denied spiritual recognition in Our Church. I am ashamed of the actions my church leaders have taken. Especially those by my old Arch Bishop, Cardinal William Levada of San Francisco. May God guide him to a better resolution to this matter or the schism may end up being between the Church's hierarchy and millions of Christ's followers, God's children. It's the richest source of Catholic representation of Christ's Love.

I pray to God through Christ our Lord for a more Christlike resolution in this matter.

    WWJD?

  2. This is not new. This church was established as an independent entity 150 years ago. The Abp Burke just wants to sell the property and confiscate the bank account. This is institutional abuse by the Archdiocese of St. Louis and by the Vatican. These bully tactics will not work in 2008 and are shameful to the People of God.

  3. quote Josph "the CDF compromises the faith of true believers in Christ over political reasons."
Tosh. These people excommunicated themselves years ago when they cut themselves off from their bishop and literally hired an unauthorised priest to tickle their ears with what they wanted to hear.

I can't believe that their over-generous bishop has declined to call in the police to recover the diocese's property which these neo-protestants have stolen from the Church.

  4. It's obvious that all this struggle is about "power and money", not Catholic dogma or tradition.

The disgruntled group should move on as they were given plenty of opportunity to resolve issues within the Diocese.
