Jesus not God: Bathurst priest

Published: October 29, 2008

"No human being can ever be God, and Jesus was a human being. It is as simple as that," Bathurst priest Fr Peter Dresser argues in a booklet on sale in several Catholic parishes, including South Brisbane's St Mary's.

"This whole matter regarding Jesus being God ... not only does violence to my own intelligence, but must be a sticking point for millions of people trying to make some kind of sense of the Christian religion ... No human being can ever be God, and Jesus was a human being. It is as simple as that," Fr Dresser of Coonamble argues, a report in The Australian says.

Fr Dresser said he found his own rural flock "very conservative" and admitted that many of them found his theology difficult to accept, the paper says. He said he had rethought his approach after taking an interest in science. "I'm delighted they're opening up the debate at St Mary's," he said.

In his book, Fr Dresser claims Mary had as many as six children, Joseph was the father of Jesus and the bodily Resurrection is not to be taken literally.

But Sydney lecturer in Church history, Anthony Robbie, said Fr Dresser's claims defied all scriptural evidence.

"What a breathtaking know all, to claim he knows the mind of Christ contrary to scripture and tradition. His words rob Christianity entirely of its meaning and purpose," Fr Robbie said.

"The Council of Nicaea settled the question that Christ was God in 325, so he is 1,700 years out of date. The rest is a regurgitation of every discredited 19th century liberal Protestant German cliche in the book."

The $20 booklet is also on sale at two Brisbane parishes: St Mary's and the Wooloowin/Windsor/Kalinga Parish of outspoken Brisbane priest Fr Richard Pascoe.

The Australian says St Mary's priests, Fr Peter Kennedy and Fr Terry Fitzpatrick have also canvassed the idea of Catholics celebrating the Eucharist in their homes without a priest.

A discussion paper handed to parishioners by Fr Kennedy and written by Charles Kelliher said the lack of priests in the 21st century should prompt the faithful to look back to the first 200 years of the cCurch, before the priesthood and the Church hierarchy came into existence.

"Like the house church of the first 200 years, it is the community of believers who can concelebrate and bring about the presence of Christ in the eucharistic celebration. Let us embark on the journey as a community of believers in the modern day house church.

"The community of believers would call forth one of its members to preside at this memorial service. This person could be either man or woman, married or single ... with no special designation except being chosen or called forth to leadership by the community," the discussion paper argues.

  1. Wow! three heretical 'priests' in one article! Their Bishops need to be paying attention and suspend all of them post haste.
All three need to go home and learn their first grade Catechism and some history all over again!
    Such stupidity is unbelieveable!
    What a bunch of losers!

  2. It must be the heat of Brisbane that does something funny to their brains.

  3. Where is that broom? Time to sweep these failed lefty-liberal trendies out of the Church. We don't need theological dinosaurs from the 19th century continuing to spread their fruitless heresies. Isn't their destructive work of the past 40 years enough? Could Fr Robbie please be put in charge of the sweeping?

  4. "Will there be any faith left".

I think all Catholics need to pray for these priests and this community. They seem to have lost their way.

  5. Move over Dan Brown ! But at least he wrote a page-turner novel which could be enjoyed while one temporarily suspended one's belief in the substantive accuracy of the traditional information which has come down to us to do with the aftermath of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

A question for Father Dresser and those of his mind : Do you believe in the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead ?

  6. Does this mean that Dresser will now deny his ordination and become Mr Dresser? After all, what will be the point of his being ordained if unordained are able to do all that he suggests?

  7. Why have the bishops of Bathurst, Brisbane and Toowoomba not long since laicised or at least suspended these idiotic Arian heretics? The most charitable explanation is that they are sleeping on the job.

Just what more does a priest have to do to get himself suspended in this country?

Priests are suspended on the mere ACCUSATION of sexual misconduct, but these three clerics apparently get away with attacking the very basis of the faith and trying to destroy the faith of Catholics, without any action against them at all!

  8. Fr Robbie does a disservice to Protestant German Liberals - at least they had an historical excuse for their poorly formed position. As for these so called 'priests' of ours, the Church door is always open - to enter and leave as they like.

  9. How sad it is when priests (and baptised Catholics) allow 'human wisdom' to tqke precedence over their faith, and the teachings of the Church?

  10. These priests have to go. Their effect is harmful to the Faith, the Church and even to those who are yet to believe. They really have left the Church in spirit if not in person. If they were lay theologians they would have been "out the door" months ago. Why aren't our bishops acting?

  11. Thank God I am not Australian. You seem to have a lot of nutty priests. I just wish that all the good priests would come out and condemn these unholy men who bring shame to the church and to fellow Catholics.

  13. So, Fr Dresser has taken "an interest in science", and is taking his parishioners along for the ride with him. If his new "faith" is science, then it amazes me that he still believes in God.
For those like myself whose main area of study was science, we know that science does not have all the answers and most probably never will. For life's deepest questions, the best that some atheistic scientists can propose are absolutely unproveable conjectural hypotheses; for inexplicable miracles such as the solar miracle of Fatima or spontaneous medical cures, science simply says "not explainable by science".
I can't believe that these heretical priests are tolerated by their bishops. They not only betray God, His Church and their current parishioners, but also generations of loyal Catholics including the ones who founded the Parish.

  14. This is why we need good Catechesis particularly on the mystery of the Hypostatic Union and the Blessed Trinity. Traditional Catechisms for children such as the Baltimore Catechism and the Penny Catechism address these points of doctrine clearly and logically. If you commit the formulas for understanding these mysteries to memory, then over time many other aspects of the Catholic faith fall into place and one's reading of Scripture and study of Tradition is enriched.

On another note, it is not surprising that the community at St Mary's in Brisbane promotes this heresy. By their fruits you shall know them. While they appear to be a "compassionate, tolerant, accepting community with a strong social justice bent" they are falling further and further into darkness and irrelevance. Ultimately, this kind of thing leads to atheism and eventually the most perverse and violent attacks agains humanity. These demons can only be driven out with prayer and fasting.

  15. That Peter Dresser doesn't know Jesus as God, is really a sad indictment of a person who has wasted his 'religious life', on other things. That Father Dresser has not encountered the miracle presence of Jesus to save, to transform, to redeem, to set free, to do things that no other 'dead' human can do, is infinitely sad... because I have.

Apart from the theological and historical proofs of Jesus's divinity, Father Dresser, in what I can only imagine is an all-consuming self centredness, chooses to discount the living testimony of millions of witnesses to the divine power of Jesus, that still exists today. Ahh but, Father Dresser and his mates at St Mary's parish are far more clever than all of us humble souls who believe in the divinity and power of Jesus Christ. Oh, and of course they are infinitely more learned and wise than that awful institution they detest: the Catholic Church. (By the way can someone explain to me why these characters are still on the 'payroll'? ) Let me say, that as priests: "you are not your own... your life has been paid for by the blood of Christ"... to be frank, I'm not really interested, as a Catholic person, in your personal hobby-horses... you are supposed to be servants of Jesus Christ, and servants of the Church. Ooooh, now that's an unpopular thought.

Scripture says, "woe, to those who lead any of my little ones astray..." better that a millstone is hung around your neck. On a very serious note, I believe the likes of Peter Dresser are guilty of the most serious breach of trust of the Catholic community.... it's not a joke. I work in Catholic schools, and I see the havoc that wacky types like him have on the faith of children.

Wacky guys like Peter Dresser and the 'priests' at St Mary's need to be challenged to be true to their vocation. IF you don't agree with the teachings and tradition of the CAtholic Church, then you should leave. I call on the Australian Bishops to confront these selfish ego-centric men before they do any more harm.

Having encountered the divine Jesus, I can assure Father Dresser, that indeed He is God. I suggest you take a 40 day silent retreat and test your theory. I suspect you will think differently when you encounter Jesus face to face.

  16. Typical load of nonsense from priests who have forgotten their seminary training and all the teaching of the Church for the past hundreds and hundreds of years. Why does anybody give them notice? Read the Catechism of the Catholic Church, if you don't accept that then you are NOT a Catholic.

  17. It is about time the Church Hierarchy deal a definite blow to these wayward preachers. Despite the shortage of clergy we should be sacking these priests because they are causing disunity and failing to teach the doctrines and truth of the Church. Enough is enough!!!! Let them go off and form their own Church with the silly goats who will follow. But let's preserve the unity of the Church through her teachings and validly celebrated sacraments.

Close down St. Mary's in Brisbane, take away their ability to preach and celebrate the sacraments. Same with this latest clown Fr. Dresser. Discipline the man and if he won't obey then dismiss him from ministry.

  18. Bravo Father Dresser! You eventually have realised that no human being can ever be God!
In all due respect and humility may I ask you whether God can be human incarnate in any case that He chooses to ?

    Yours respectfully,
    Jean-Wil Ohis,
    (Sinner)

  19. Wolfgang Simson, a theologian from Germany, has written a book about house churches, called "Houses that change the World". He also has submitted theses about where he believes God is calling the church to in the 21st Century. I recommend to do an internet search on "house church movement" or on "Wolfgang Simson" to follow up on this.

  20. Wow!

  21. How can this man remain a priest in the Roman Catholic Church? Are we so hard up for priests that we will accept any male on offer no matter how misguided and theologically ignorant? Surely harm is being directed, yet again, on the People of God and in this case it is clearly a 'scandal' as defined by Canon Law. He needs to be removed along with his literature and if he does not accept the teachings of the Catholic Church, I can only hope that he and his literature are very happy together.

  22. I am so utterly appalled by what I read is being discussed openly at parish level by a priest of the Roman Church. If this is true, action needs to be taken. Perhaps the supposed priest should read the Nicene Creed. It is one of the great fallacies of Modernism and Post Modernism to suppose that our limited experience of existence and knowledge allows us to make such sweeping judgments on core beliefs that have been part of our faith for 2000 years. I sometimes wonder why such candidates were allowed to continue with their priestly studies. Then again I am only a humble parishioner. How would I know!

  23. Time for the Australian Catholic Bishops to get tough with these idiots. Simple. Australians seem to cower at confident leadership - this needs to change. Silly men like these need to be dealt with swiftly and decisively. Compassionately? Yes, why not take them out of active service and let them ponder their beliefs in a monastery somewhere - away from where they can harm people. Come on Bishops, we rely on you to act!

  24. I hope this has been misreported. No one has the right to rip the very heart out of our faith. The WORD was made flesh, and came among us as a Man. The Incarnation is the mystery of mysteries.

  25. Why the hell are they allowed to continue in The Church which they deny? Cushy life probably. And hierarchies criticize SSPX, et al, not to mention Motu Proprio. Lord preserve us!

  26. God created all things visible and invisible and nothing is hard or impossible for God.
Man cannot be GOD BUT God Can and did become MAN. Fr Dresser is spouting the Muslims' excuse to deny Jesus Christ. Which is covered in 1 John 2:22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
Actually we should thank Fr Dresser for stirring up this old denial. People need to know how to answer the challenge ( man cannot be God )

  27. 1 John 2: 18-27 Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour. 19They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.

20But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.[d] 21I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth. 22Who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a man is the antichrist—he denies the Father and the Son. 23No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.

24See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. 25And this is what he promised us—even eternal life.

26I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. 27As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.

  28. We know that anything is possible for God,why does this person question his teaching and the teachings of God?

  29. This is disgraceful! If their bishops think they can avoid scandal by not admonishing these men then they are sadly mistaken.

When you look at what has happened to good priests who were only accused of sexual misconduct (that is: not proven) that were summarily suspended in an instant, and you compare that with the inaction and pussy-footing around of the Archbishop of Brisbane, you've got to wonder if our leadership is missing in in-action!

  30. Fr Dresser seems to forget his logic education: It is evidentially true that '...no human being can ever be God.' But surely, as creator of human life, God can become human?

  31. Article like this shook my faith from the root. Jesus is the second person of the Blessed Trinity, He is true man and true God, and there is no ‘if’ and ‘but’ about it. This is our ‘core’ part of our Catholic Faith. We repeat in our Baptismal promises, when we say the ‘Credo’ (I believe…) in the church every Sunday. How can a Catholic priest be preaching what he is preaching? Why is he in charge of this parish still? Is he allowed to say and do what he likes? As far as I am concerned; ‘This is the sure sign of the devil working in the church taking the forms of priests like these and taking the people with them. They should be stopped at all costs and stopped at once before any further damage is done.

  32. Well, it is always a good thing for anyone to say what they really think. It now is time for Peter Dresser to leave the priesthood. As he says that Jesus is not God and so forth, honestly in speaking out should lead to honesty in action, ie leave the priesthood now mate.

  33. Actually to call these three attention-seeking clowns "Arian heretics" is an insult to the Arians, who although they thought that there was a time when Christ did not exist, certainly did not take the extreme position that He was not God but merely a human being. And the Arians would have been as equally appalled as Catholics by the absurd claim that "the community of believers can concelebrate and bring about the presence of Christ in the eucharistic celebration" in the absence of a priest ordained in succession to the Apostles. My apologies to any neo-Arians who may be out there.

  34. If "no human being can ever be God" than no human being can ever be fully human, since to be human is to be the image and likeness of God. As St Athanasius said so startlingly: "God became human so that every human being can become God."

  35. Another concern, is a Mass celebrated by Fr Dresser valid? Is Jesus made present in the consecration if this priest does not believe Jesus is God? Have all the people at his Masses only received bread and not the body, blood, soul and divinity of Christ?

  36. How absurd! I thought Peter Kennedy and Peter Dresser were supposed to be "radical". Denying Christ as God is about the most conservative religious position one can take. After all, it's the one that God Jesus crucified. Why? Because those who crucified him couldn't understand the paradox that only a truly human being IS God.
The foolish notion that to "err is human" is at the heart of this mistake. NO! To be like God is to BE HUMAN. Alas, we are all so much less than human; but so egotistical that we judge "humanness" by our own measure... That's precisely what Jesus came to reveal to us as our mistake: we are God's image and likeness, if only we knew it. And he did. That's why he IS God.

  37. Yet more proof that satan does exist.

But hope prevails, because where there is evil, there is good. GOD is good

  38. What Would Jesus Do?
Would he vilify them for not understanding?
Does he (a priest) have no right to be in questioning or being in doubt, is he (the priest) not human?
Didn't the apostles also doubt? What did Jesus Do?
    Have we not doubted?

Shouldn't we have compassion in pastoring to others who do not believe as we do? Are they then excluded (ordained or lay)?
    What Would Jesus Do?

  39. The buck stops in relation to this rubbish with the bishops of Australia and finally the Pope.

In 1998, the Australian bishops suffered a pretty comprehensive dressing down from JPII and the prefects of various congregations during their ad limina visits and the Synod of Oceania. This happened especially with the issue of the famous Statement of Conclusions and the then Holy Father’s ad limina address to the bishops. This concern by Rome was not just over the scandalous use of the 3rd Rite everywhere.

The Statement, which purported, for reasons of “romanita”, to be a joint effort by the curia and some Australian bishops was really imposed upon the Australian episcopacy by the former, with many of the bishops grumbling excessively. The Statement, amongst many topics, also addressed the serious problems and erroneous ideas in Australia about Christology.

Relations between Rome and the Australian bishops soured considerably. Something had to be done. So in 2004 at the next round of ad limina visits much diplomacy took place ending in a lovely cocktail party, with curial officials and the Australian bishops attending, where they smiled and slapped each other on the back saying, pretty well, that everything Down Under was becoming rosy again and what good friends they all were, despite the continued appeals to Rome by distressed laity.

To give the new rosy picture some credibility, what was needed was a confirmation by a “conservative” bishop and not just the posturing of the lunatic dissenters amongst the Australian episcopacy. Such confirmation eventually came in the form of an interview granted in Rome by Cardinal George Pell to Zenit News Agency. The headline for the interview in March 2004 was “Reasons for Cautious Optimism”. Cardinal Pell, while assuring us that progress was being made, did acknowledge that it was not spectacular progress. However, he went on to say, amongst other things, in response to the interviewer’s query about Christology (and this is the same year that Fr Peter Dresser published “God is Big. Real Big!”):

“In the last five years I'm not aware of any explicitly erroneous teaching on Christology. There might be around Australia one or two centres which are really centres for paganism and for other religions, pantheism and things like that. But I don't think we have trouble on the level of Christology.”

You can see for yourself that the online publication of the rubbish by Dresser is acknowledged as “a joint project between St Mary’s Catholic Community in South Brisbane and Fr Peter Dresser.” So, it’s not the case that the former is “only” selling this iniquitous book.

Dresser’s stuff wasn’t coming from some irrelevant centre for paganism and pantheism, like Cardinal Pell might want to think, but from the very heart of the Catholic Church in Australia; from a parish priest of the Bathurst Diocese in good standing then, and, incredibly, still today it seems; and from the “St Mary’s Catholic Community in South Brisbane”.

Faithful priests and laity knew that Cardinal Pell was dead wrong. They knew that attacks on Christ’s divinity had been commonplace for years before 1998 in many Australian seminaries, parishes and “Catholic” schools. They also knew that nothing had changed by 2004 – if anything, the situation had generally worsened. People were just stunned by Cardinal Pell’s opinion! He was dead wrong in 2004 and, if he holds the same view today, he is still dead wrong. Dead wrong even about his own archdiocese.

The Dresser/South Brisbane stuff is just the tiniest tip of an iceberg that is certainly not suffering from global warming!

As far as South Brisbane is concerned, we have suffered over a decade of inaction by those in authority. Now we are expected to swallow the nonsense that dialogue and committee meetings need to take place or the archbishop might have to close the parish down. What rot! This latest episode has been going on for 2 months now. The administrator priest (not having the tenure of a PP) and the other fellow, a priest of another diocese camping there in some irregular situation, could be dismissed and replaced tomorrow by faithful Catholic priests who could begin to repair the pastoral damage by teaching the true Catholic Faith and celebrating a true Liturgy and dispensing valid Sacraments again.

Far be it for your humble layman even to begin to think about judging the present successors of the apostles (that’s up to Christ who IS God) but we can sometimes judge their actions. But one is reminded of some of the reasons perhaps for the great St John Chrysostom writing so robustly:

“The floor of Hell is paved with the whitened skulls of bishops!”

  40. Australia...what can you expect!

  41. We as Catholics have started on that slippery road to God knows where. I now ask that the Catholic Bishops take all these so called priests to task and get rid of them once and for all.

  42. Father Dresser is denying the foundation on which the whole of christianity -both catholic and protestant - is based.
Not even the reformers of the fifteenth and sixteenth century denied the divinity and humanity of Jesus Christ.
In making such a statement I would consider that Father Dresser is no longer a member of the christian religion.

  43. Father Dresser is correct: Jesus is not a human being. He is a divine being. Difference.

  44. I will have this discussion with anyone but a priest. A priest does not have the right to this kind of discussion as his entire livelihood (and pay) depends on faith in the divinity of Christ. The priest can refund his room and board and whatever salary he has taken from the Church since drawing the conclusion that Jesus is not God and then we can talk.

  45. He is Christ. This priest's personal opinion will not change that Truth. He needs to be careful about the biblical admonition of leading his flock astray. I don't even know what this makes him. Is he reverting to Judism or a fundamentalist protesting post modern Unitarian....hmmmm. I will pray for him.

  46. With God all things are possible - even allowing a little 21st century Arianism! Two words: Anathema sit.

  47. Fr. Robbie implies that the problem with Dresser's book is Arianism: a 4th Century heresy which denied that the Divine Word is the co-Eternal Son of the Father. This is what we call a Trinitarian heresy, because it denies that there are three Persons in God. This doesn't seem to be Dresser's main problem (at least from the passages cited in your article). Dresser subscribes to a fifth century heresy known as Nestorianism, which was rightly condemned by the Council of Ephesus in 431 AD. Nestorius and his followers denied the truth of the Hypostatic Union, i.e. that the Man conceived in the womb of the Virgin is, in fact, the Eternal Son of the Father. Dresser seems to deny just about everything that the Church teaches, but the principle issue here is that he denies the sublime truth of the Incarnation. St. John warns us in very clear words about such false teachers: "For many deceivers have gone out into the world, men who will not acknowledge the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh: such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist." (2 John.7) "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are of God; for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit which confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit which does not confess Jesus is not of God. This is the spirit of antichrist..." (1 John 4:1-3).
I think it should be clear which spirit has inspired Fr. Dresser!

  48. Not three heretics, Stan. It's two heretics and an apostate. Denying Christ's divinity is a renounciation of Christian faith.

BTW, I used to teach architecture history at the university level, and I'm sick of these mis-statements about house/churches. What was called a domus ecclesia (house church) was not somebody's living room. House churches were not private houses where christians gathered. It refers to an Early Christian practice of the community purchasing a house as a community and converting it into a dedicated house of worship. For architecture historians it is interesting because as a building type it remains a house, but functionally it becomes a place of worship. The best example one at Dur Europas in what is now Syria even had a braonze plaque decalring it as a place of worship not a private house as was required by law.

  49. Once again, the Arian heresy raises its ugly head. How many times do we have to go around the block on this issue. Read St. Augustine to get a good handle on Arianism.

  50. As a canonist I would say that this priest has committed the delict of heresy. In fact he may in fact have committed apostasy. Either way his excommunication needs to be declared. Of course he should be given the opportunity to recant first. Then a nice long period in an Opus Dei retreat house would be in order. The man has caused scandal, violated his promises, and denied the Faith. If the bishop does not discipline him then the bishop himself is guilty of dereliction of duty.

  51. The question that, of course, the article does not address is this: WHY on earth is this heretic allowed to be a priest in the first place? WHY doesn't the so-called "Bishop" of that area get rid of him?? And WHY doesn't the Vatican swoop down and rid the Church of these messengers of Satan? The fact that the Vatican shows little interest in such things is VERY telling. More "fruits" of Vatican II, I suppose. Is this the "springtime" that JP II talked about??

Let's get one thing straight: These heretics are not ignorant of the faith. They are not misguided or misinformed. They are spreading the message of SATAN. They are willing participants in EVIL. For crying out loud, people, wake up and stop being so naive!!

  52. Note to "TJ Lawson": You ask, "What would Jesus do?"

Well, obviously you subscribe to the notion that Jesus was a spineless wimp who was afraid of His own shadow. That's not the Jesus of the Gospel.

What would the Jesus do Who threw the money changers out of the temple with a whip? What would the Jesus do Who said to St. Peter, "get behind me, Satan!" What would the Jesus do Who called the religious leaders of the time things like "you generation of vipers", "hypocrites", "fools", graves full of "dead men's bones", etc?? Do you honestly think He would allow the heresy to go unchallenged??

Stop making Jesus out to be some limp-wristed marshmallow and read your Bible for once. He did say more than the Sermon on the Mount, you know.

  53. Wow, this article truly shocks me. I do not understand how one can claim to be Catholic and also believe that Jesus Christ was not God. It is, after all, our most basic and fundamental belief. I'm not normally one who is a stickler for rules, saying that one must always 100% agree with the official Church position all the time, but this one belief is essentially the Catholic faith.

To TJ: while we should not exclude individuals who have difficulty believing or accepting the official Church stance on issues, it is not wrong to ask someone to not use their official position within the Church to spread information that contradicts the very core of our faith. If diplomacy fails, then unfortunately steps must be taken to stop the spreading of such misinformation by a Church official.

  54. And where is the bishop in all this? Why is the book being offered for sale in a Catholic Church? Where are the faithful parishioners?

Perhaps it is high time for Fr. Dresser to seek laicization?

One does indeed wonder why there appears to be such a concentration of dissenting priests in one small area? Could it be environmental - global warming perhaps???

  55. There is nothing new here ... Fr. Dresser is Arian, a follower of Arius, who had the same belief, which was condemned as a heresy in 325AD. The others are just plain Protestants of the liberal wing... Yes, it's hard to believe that Jesus was fully human and fully divine, but if you have "eyes to see and ears to hear, you just know it. And, when known by faith, its the only thing that makes sense of everything.

  56. If Christ is not God, then what is the sense of having any eucharistic celebration, since nothing is being transubtantiated? If, indeed, Christ is not the Son of God, then ALL of Fr. Dresser's priestly powers , including the power to forgive sins through Christ's actions, become untenable, and he might as well look for another job. In effect, as a man of no faith, Fr. Dresser becomes quite useless, doesn't he? So much for Fr. Dresser.

  57. It is truly sad that neither this priest's bishop nor archbishop have issued any statements about this book or communicated any discplinary action against this priest. It can be concluded that these bishops endorse this kind of flawed thinking as evidenced by their inaction.

Just look through the websites of the Diocese of Bathurst and the Archdiocese of Brisbane and you can see that orthodox Catholicsm is not endorsed. Priests who do not want to be called "Father", priests not wearing the collar, nuns who dress like soccer moms, parishes who don't call themselves "church" but "community". These can happen only because of a weak spined hierarch. The Church in Australia is in serious trouble. I'm sure Benedict XVI is truly saddened by the state of affairs of the Church here.

  58. And God is .... What nonsense, it is not his intelligence but his soul that the good Father should be concerned about. He not only is off the track but is responsible for the souls of his flock that he misleads.

  59. let's see, a priest gets it wrong,
that's the very reason we have a Church.
It isn't there for my "opinion", "insight", "writings".

This is the Church of the Apostles, let the apostles teach and the priest learn to "listen".

  60. I find it refreshing that Catholic priests and lay people are openly discussing significant faith issues and exploring their personal beliefs, even though those views can be confronting and controversial. Over recent times I have been particularly interested in activities of the Progressive Christian Network of Victoria which also challenges some fundamental beliefs and has got me thinking about what I really believe.

  61. Please brethren, we want to know more about the Buthurst priest who claims that Jesus is not God!
Thank you for communicating with us on this matter, and may God continue to bless you in Jesus' name.

    Affectionate warm regards.

  62. Peter says"
And where is the bishop in all this? Why is the book being offered for sale in a Catholic Church? Where are the faithful parishioners?

The Bishop is so very inactive in Bathurst. He was to be replaced years ago but nothing ever happened. The Diocese seems to just amble along without any real direction.

  63. Such blasphemous and anti-Christ thoughts!.We have to pray for these priests who are leading the flock astray. We will pray and the HOLY SPIRIT will teach and guide the people to discern.

  64. Fr. Dresser rejects one of the basic tenets of the Catholic faith, i.e. the divinity of Jesus-Christ. He should be asked by his bishop to recant or face ex-communication. He should either become a Muslim or a Jehovah's Witness, neither of which recognizes the divine nature of Christ.

  65. Fr Dresser of Bathurst says that "no human being can ever be God and Jesus was a human being." Putting aside the question of what is meant by a "human being" and in what way can the term be applied to the Incarnate Word, it is obvious that Father Dresser's problem arises from not approaching the Mystery of the Incarnation from the appropriate starting point. He would do well to re-read the definition of the Council of Chalcedon.

What was the point from which the Fathers of that Council began their discussions? It was not a human being becoming God!

Whether or not a human being can be God is not the point. The good news of Jesus Christ is that God can be, and did become "human being" in his flesh-taking.

Of course, none of this even touches upon the Eastern Christian teaching of "theosis" which sees salvation in terms of human beings becoming "God-like." But then again I would doubt that Father Dresser has much time for St Gregory Palamas.

  66. This Novus Ordo "priest" is an Arian heretic.
    St. Athanasius pray for us.

  67. "Mt St Francis Hermitage", in my humble opinion to call Dresser a Nestorian is greatly understating Dresser's heresy, and insulting to Nestorians.

Nestorians believe(d) that Jesus Christ is two persons in one, God and a man, denying the hypostatic union. (And recently some (alleged) Nestorian churches have rejoined the Church, saying that the split was all a linguistic/philosophical misunderstanding of terms).
Dresser's heresy seems to go much further and deny that Jesus Christ is God at all in any way. His position seems indistinguishable from that of a non-Christian.

  68. Can I suggest to those of us who are deeply concerned about this issue, that we write, - IN LOVE, and IN HUMILITY, to the President of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, Archbishop Philip Wilson. His email, (which is in the public domain at the ACBC website) is: phwilson@adelaide.catholic.org.au. I think it helps our Bishops to form a picture, when the Church writes about their thoughts and concerns. This is, I believe, how the Holy Spirit, often speaks and brings about change. DON'T attack our Bishops in the process, because they deserve our honour and respect, (and they do care) but let your views be known. I think it actually gives them a stronger foundation on which to take action with problems such as the ones with Mr Dresser et al., when they know how the Body of Christ is being affected.

  69. A priest who is not a Christian--it's as simple as that.

  70. I strongly support CD's suggestion to concerned Catholics to write to the Australian Catholic Bishops' Conference in love and humility to express their concerns that Christ's Divinity is being questioned by a Catholic priest.

  71. If Cath News relies on "spies" for its info about where this book is sold, I will cease receiving it. what is the source of your info?

  72. Hello,Fr Dresser. As a priest you know the word of God, which says Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary.Since you know the bible you can read read again and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you the truth of the word of God.Read the new testament and you will have all the answers because the same God you say is a human being is the God who will judge the whole human race.God bless

  73. The real problem is two fold.

The respective **bishops** have lost their way - this just hasn't popped up in the last week or so. These bishops have been quietly turning a blind eye for ages and the damage is enormous.

Secondly, this is the tip of the iceberg. This actually is not as dangerous as some of the more subtle heresies that one hears from the pulpit every Sunday.

I hope the new Pro-Nuncio opens a web page where the faithful can document some of the un-Catholic, un-Christian heresy that poisons the flock ... St Mary's have just been too cocky to keep their beliefs quiet but plenty of priests do just that to escape attention and so as to not embarrass their bishop mates.

  74. Tts 2:13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

They are the same. Both are called the Alpha and the Omega.

But how could he not be lost? He is in a lost religion created by man. Better just the Word of God and not the words of men. Even if they all agree with each other.

  75. Never fear Tim, Fr Dresser has now, at least overtly, repented his man-made heresies and reaffirmed his belief in all the Church's divinely revealed doctrines.

  76. Oh,how the Antichrist is working! As our Blessed Mother has said to Fr Gobbi,"Satan has also entered into the interior of the Church and has succeeded in darkening her splendour. With the darkness of sin,he has obscured the splendour of her holiness;with the wound of division,he has made an attack upon the strenghth of her unity;with the spread of errors,he has stricken her in the proclamation of the truth."Yes! SaTan's work is made that easy with the help of priests and bishops who like Adam and Eve were tempted by and deluded by the promise of being greater than God Himself! To concerned Catholics,"Do not despair.Did he not promise that he would be with us till the end of time? Our heavenly Mother pleads with us to save these poor priests who are in danger of losing their souls,by PRAYING THE ROSARY>This is the chain that will bind Satan and his evil spirits who are wandering in the world, determined to bring the Church down.Let us take up our rosaries again.

  77. Fr Dresser is gutsy and smart.....and represents many of us who were brought up Catholic but have questions regarding the nature of Christ and the resurrection [and there are plenty of us] God gave us brains for a reason! some folks out there should read the book ''How Jesus became Christ'' it had a profound influence on me. P.S. I write this with no disrespect , but in the spirit of intellectual curiosity.

  78. Steve H, the Catholic Church has always strongly encouraged all Catholics to use our brains, to be intellectually curious, and to ask and dwell upon questions regarding the nature of Christ and the resurrection. But if one comes up with the answer that the Church’s most basic and unchangeable doctrines are wrong, don’t be a hypocrite about it. The “gutsy” thing to do would be to abstain from going through the motions of celebrating Mass and the sacraments whilst believing that the words and actions are false and that Jesus is not God.

  79. Sorry if I may hurt anyone around here but the most logical comment that I have read is that of Steve H. Im sorry I might sound rude to others , but Peter Dresser has so much logic in his thinking. Did you guys ever read how ancient men became gods, did u read about the virgin birth that its origin is pagan. go back 5000 years before the birth of Jesus, you will see that many ancient gods such as horus of Egypt, krishna of India and many others have the same exact story of Jesus. just want you to know the truth - if you want to be blinded keep it up, it's your opinion, but Jesus was paganised by the early church fathers. There is nothing about the virgin birth, the resurrection and the ascension that is not taken from paganism. Even the birth date of Jesus on dec 25 is the birth of many mythical pagan gods if you do not know I guess you need to do a lot of researches. I think one should .go back and read about jewish christianity even before arianism , it realy tells that Jesus is definately a very wise human evne greater thant any other prophet but he was never god. I am not saying that to limit gods actions, btu by even thinking that god became human you are limiting god and making him weak. God is not limited in one place neither is he up in the skies, he is every where in this beautiful nature. so you cannot limit god in one place.
