Remembering the true meaning of Christmas

In their annual Christmas messages, Australian prelates have touched on themes of charity, selflessness, family, and care for marginalised people.

Catholics are called to remember the true meaning of Christmas as detailed in Luke's Gospel – the birth of the Son of God, born to the Virgin Mary and laid in a manger because there was no room for them in inn.

Broome Bishop Christopher Saunders reminds us that "Our Christian faith beckons us constantly not to be submerged by materialism, nor to be blinded to the needs of the poor and marginalised, nor to be deaf to the cries of those who are suffering from famine and war. This Christmas are we not called to be Christ to the world?"

Canberra-Goulburn Archbishop Christopher Prowse asks us to "give priority this Christmas and New Year season to practical charity", focusing on our families, neighbourhoods and the wider communities. "For a start, we could give generously to Christmas appeals for monies or Christmas gifts to the marginalised, especially the homeless. Then this Christmas will begin to reverse the inhospitality of the first Christmas over two thousand years ago."

"Jesus did not come into the world via some grand gesture or magic appearance," says Broken Bay Bishop Peter Comensoli. "Jesus is not a super hero. The Son of God came to live among us, as one of us and offer his life for us, in exactly the same way each one of us do, in our families."
