Date set for ordination of new Bishop of Darwin

Bishop-elect Charles Gauci (The Southern Cross/Ben Macmahon)

The episcopal ordination of Bishop-elect Charles Gauci as the Bishop of Darwin will take place at St Mary's Cathedral, Darwin, on September 26.

The Darwin Diocese announced yesterday that Bishop-elect Gauci had asked retiring Darwin Bishop Eugene Hurley to be Principal Consecrator, with Adelaide Apostolic Administrator and Port Pirie Bishop Greg O’Kelly SJ and Perth Auxiliary Bishop Donald Sproxton (Auxiliary for the Perth Archdiocese), as co-consecrators. The Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Adolfo Tito Yllana will preside.

Pope Francis appointed Bishop-elect Gauci the next Bishop of Darwin on June 27. Up until this appointment, he was the administrator of Adelaide's St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral.

Bishop-Elect Gauci is the first Adelaide diocesan priest to be ordained a bishop in 45 years, The Southern Cross reports.

He will return to Adelaide to celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving at St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral on Sunday October 7 at 11am.
