    18-Oct-2010

In her many letters, Mary shared her intimate relationship with God and, as she detailed her visits to them in their isolation and deprivation, inspired her Sisters to carry on: "We can all work quietly doing our best for God" (1883).

As her health declined, Mary visited when she could, and despite the incapacities from a stroke, continued writing her words of support and encouragement.

  8. Pope praises Mary's courage and saintly example

    18-Oct-2010

Irreverent Australian cheers echoed around St Peter's Square as the Pope recognised Mary MacKillop as Australia's first saint. With Australian and Aboriginal flags fluttering around the enormous square, the gold-robed Pope lauded MacKillop for her "courageous and saintly example".

Lake Macquarie grandmother Kathleen Evans (pictured), whose 1993 recovery from cancer was deemed by the church to be a miracle attributable to MacKillop, presented the Pope with a newly holy "relic" in the form of a cross carved from red gum from Penola and encasing strands of the new saint's hair.

St Mary is an inspirational first Australian saint. Ask the question of who might be next, and three names seem to be mentioned: Caroline Chisholm; Eileen O’Connor, and Irene McCormack.

The first was a pioneer, a woman to whom colonial Australia and Australians owed much. The second two are more recent; all are in the tradition of St Mary of the Cross.
