  1. Educating Roddy: the life of Justice Meagher

    07-Sep-2012

  3. Of Pharisees, pots, bronze kettles, liturgical rubrics, cups and cats

    07-Sep-2012

Several years ago, I was at church meeting where we were discussing liturgical rubrics. There was heated discussion over a number of issues: Should the congregation be standing or kneeling during the Eucharistic prayer? What is the most reverent way to receive communion? Should laypersons be allowed to cleanse the chalice and cups after communion, asks Ron Rolheiser.

    07-Sep-2012

  8. Peace was Sr Anne’s passion

    07-Sep-2012

In the interest of justice and peace, Christian Peacemakers sent delegations to many war-torn areas, including Haiti, Iraq and the West Bank. Among the envoys  was the tiny, redoubtable Sacred Heart of Jesus religious sister, Anne  Montgomery.  Along with other Christian Peacemakers, she spent years in Hebron, a war-torn city in Israel’s West Bank. In a ‘ministry of presence,’ Peacemakers served as international observers in the interest of justice and peace. Sr Anne believed that violence ended where love began – and lived that charism throughout her life. This obituary for Sr Anne appeared in the Catholic News Service.

  9. Hunting The Heretics

    07-Sep-2012

It was 1163, Tours. A Church council gathered under Pope Alexander III, and with the protection of Henry II, king of England and ruler of Normandy, Anjou and Aquitaine. This, according to historian R.I. Moore, was the moment when the medieval ‘war on heresy’ was publicly declared.  Moore’s history of the suppression of heresy in Europe at this time is reviewed in The Times Literary Supplement by Diarmaid MacCulloch.
