It is possible that Australia's first cardinal - Patrick Moran
(1830-1911), was responsible behind the scenes for the definition
settled upon by the First Vatican Council for the dogma of papal
infallibility in 1870. It was not as a scholar, though, that Moran made
his deepest mark. Moran always maintained a high profile and was never
afraid of a fight, content to be hated by his opponents. - James Baxter, reviewing Philip Ayres' recent biography

Catholics are big avoiders of certain churches. If you ask people why
they go to Mass at St Joseph’s two miles away rather than Sacred Heart
around the corner, they may say that it’s because the liturgy is more
dignified (or informal). But the most common response is something
along the lines of: “Well, I know Fr Gerry at Sacred Heart does his
best, but Fr Michael at St Joe’s is so much more welcoming.” - Damian Thompson

Muslim scholars, is so important, being the first such statement since
Vatican II's call to interfaith dialogue more than 40 years ago.

The reflections of Dorothy Day, an enduring influence on US
Catholicism, suggest what that more might be. In her life, with its
mixture of intellectual enquiry, hospitality to the poorest of people
and protest against injustice, pacifism had a central place. She used
many arguments to justify it. But her emphasis on it remained constant
and costly. - Andrew Hamilton SJ

Dietrich Bonhoeffer once defined a blessing as "a visible, perceptible,
effective, proximity of God." He is right, but what does that mean? To
bless someone, literally, means to speak well of him or her. More
deeply, that means to see someone’s energy, and honour it as a source
of joy and delight, rather than as an intrusion or a threat. This can
be very hard to do. - Ron Rolheiser

Sexual purity, along with obedience, were given extraordinary salience.
Hence the tremendous and disproportionate fuss that clergy made in
nineteenth-century France about banning dancing, cleaning up folk
festivals, and the like. Young people were refused Communion, or
absolution, unless they gave these things up altogether. The Vatican’s
present position seems to want to retain the most rigid moralism in the
sexual field. - Charles Taylor
