Of all the life experiences that I have had, this has been the most rewarding. As I reflect on the many people who have been part of the fabric of my life, I give gratitude to God that I have had the opportunity to learn from these western people who accept distances, droughts, floods, hardships, and loss of loved ones with such courage and perseverance. Family life is so important to them and so treasured. - Sr Rita Connor, The Review

The prophet speaks in such a way that people know that he or she understands the truth of their lives at a profound level. Even though a detailed concrete answer is not given, people receive hope because there is one who really grasps the difficulty of their situation. - Fr Noel Connoly, St Columban's Mission Society

Every choice is a series of renunciations: If I marry one person, I cannot marry anyone else; if I live in one place, I cannot live anywhere else; if I choose a certain career, that excludes many other careers; if I have this, then I cannot have that. The list could go on indefinitely. To choose one thing is to renounce others. That's the nature of choice. - Fr Ron Rolheiser, ronrolheiser.com

It is unjust to suggest that everything happened in a blinding flash of light on the road to Damascus. Something dramatic certainly happened. It was enough to stop St Paul carrying out his mission of persecution. It seems to have been enough to put St Paul into a state of confusion, which began the process of conversion. It certainly did not impose a conversion on St Paul and dictate a change in his life. - Bishop John Arnold, Thinking Faith

"Stop-Loss" is one of those unusual terms associated with American war activity that does not immediately mean anything to the casual observer. Like "rendition", it has to be explained. It actually refers to the decision concerning someone who has completed active service and is to be discharged but is commanded to return to action for another tour by the military powers that be. - Fr Peter Malone, Australian Catholic Office for Film and Broadcasting

Today's teacher has to survive in a world of gimmickry. Students pay better attention to ringtones than to the human voice. They expect colour pictures and flashing graphics rather than pen and whiteboard. So a good teacher must learn to tap into short attention spans. In my case, an Irish accent and some quaint expressions helped, but teachers must use whatever they can. - Frank O'Shea, Eureka Street

The very notion that we can "shop”" for a church like we shop for consumer goods is simply mistaken. It misses the nature of the Church. The Christian faith is not just about "Me and Jesus", it is about "Me in Jesus". It also implies that Church membership is one more optional consumer selection among many in a growing smorgasbord of modern materialist and consumerist lifestyles. - Keith A. Fournier, Catholic Online

Forty years ago, Pope Paul VI provoked the greatest uproar against a papal edict in the long history of the Roman Catholic Church when he reiterated the Church's ban on artificial birth control by issuing the encyclical "Humanae Vitae." At the time, commentators predicted that not only would the teaching collapse under its own weight, but it might well bring the "monarchical papacy" down with it. - John L.
