Kenyan archbishop warns condoms will not prevent AIDS
Catholic Church leaders have warned that condoms are not an answer in the war against the HIV/AIDS in Kenya, where 700 people die every day from the disease.
Speaking in Nairobi, Kenya's Catholic primate Archbishop Ndingi Mwana a'Nzeki, insisted that abstinence and fidelity are the only reliable ways to avoid AIDS.
Speaking at a graduation ceremony, he argued that unlike condoms and drugs, abstinence and fidelity have no negative side effects.
"Those suffering from the pandemic should take care and avoid infecting others," he said. "Those who are not should abstain from immorality and remain faithful to one another when they marry."
The archbishop was responding to last week's joint push from the UN and the Kenyan Government for a mass distribution of condoms and the intensification of a community education program designed to encourage condom use.
