Insurance blowout forces Catholic school fee hike
Parents of 36,000 Catholic parish primary school students in the Archdiocese of Sydney will be charged an extra $45 per student next year because of a huge blowout in the cost of insurance.
Parents of 26,000 regional secondary school students will be required to pay an additional $20.
The Sydney Catholic Education Office said yesterday it had no choice but to pass on the bill to parents in additional fees.
Executive director Br Kelvin Canavan said annual insurance premiums for the 148 parish primary and regional secondary schools had almost doubled in two years to $10.5 million.
"The main increases in this period were for workers compensation which rose from $2.2 million to $4 million and public liability -- up from $1.4 million to $3.5 million," Br Kelvin said.
Br Kelvin said the increased charges would be staggered over the next three years to soften the impact on parents.
Many of the workers compensation and public liability claims arise from classroom, playground and sporting accidents.
