Lobby says legislation needed for equitable access to higher education
Independent Catholic lobbyist PolMin has called on the Federal Parliament to legislate for equitable access to higher education in Australia.
PolMin - the Australian Political Ministry Network - said the Higher Education Support Act 2003, passed by the Senate earlier this month, sets out the framework for the delivery of higher education and assistance to students. However it neglects to provide for equitable access to higher education in Australia.
PolMin said: "Catholic social teaching holds to the principles that it is the right of every Australia to access to education, and that higher education is fundamental to the development of the human person because it is through higher education that a person can develop his or her skills enabling him or her to participate fully in society."
PolMin points out that currently funding is provided to higher education providers for the "disadvantaged", but there are no accountability procedures.
"PolMin believes legislation is required that defines who is to supported and how they are to be supported. It is only through legislation that we as a society can make a commitment to equitable access to higher education, and we as a society acknowledge and truly support those who are at present denied access to higher education."
