Office Director and Jury Chair, Fr Richard Leonard said, "The jury was struck by the brave way Tom White bought to the Australian public the ongoing tragedy of mental illness in Australia." "The Burdekin Report told us that over 70% of all homeless people in Australia suffered from mental illness. In large measure this was from the wholesale closure of many mental health facilities. But it was also shown that people went onto the street because of mid-life mental health crisis. This is the world Tom White explores," The jury awarded the prize because of the poignant way Alkinos Tsilimidos sensitively directs Colin Friels, in an outstanding performance.
