ACU supports new high school nursing program
NSW Premier Bob Carr has announced an innovative Nursing Studies program that will allow Year 11 and 12 students considering nursing to receive training which may count towards a Bachelor of Nursing degree at the Australian Catholic University.
This initiative is being offered for the first time in the state to students in Sydney Region schools, and is being developed through the collaboration of ACU National, TAFE and St George Hospital.
The non-award course aims to make a transitional link between Higher School Certificate (HSC) students wishing to pursue nursing as a career and the higher education sector.
"ACU National is very proud to be contributing to the development of this innovative and exciting program," said ACU National Head of the School of Nursing (NSW), Dr Cindy Leigh.
The program, Nursing Studies will be taught in two stages providing both theoretical and clinical nursing experience. Stage One, (two units), will be delivered by TAFE teachers and supported by clinical staff at St George Hospital, and can be taken in Year 11 or Year 12.
Stage Two, (two units), will be delivered by ACU National and will require students to complete theoretical and practical work at St George Hospital, comparable with requirements of first year students in the University’s Bachelor of Nursing degree.
"ACU National has a strong reputation of quality education, a strength which rests on a 150 year old tradition," said Dr Leigh. "The University’s involvement with the new Nursing Studies program reflects ACU National’s ongoing commitment in preparing nurses who are not only safe and competent clinicians but are also well-equipped to reflect on the ethical and moral considerations that arise in contemporary nursing practice and patient care."
Students who complete Stage One of the course will receive a statement of attainment towards Certificate III level courses.
