Feature - Walking away from what they do not know
"People who leave the Church are not leaving because they are rejecting the teachings of John Paul II or Pope Benedict. Most do so because they go to Catholic schools and they think that the kind of warm secular humanism with Christian gloss that they get in Catholic schools is in fact the Catholic faith and it hasn't captured their imagination, their love or their intellect so they are walking away from something that they do not know." - The Catholic Herald

Film Review - Kung Fu Panda
Kung Fu Panda is essentially a martial arts comedy and is a total action movie. It has striking effects and action sequences and a particularly impressive concluding fantasy sequence which brings DreamWorks to a new level of technological sophistication. There is a strong cultural feel about the movie and it heavily draws on Chinese culture to bring authenticity to its fantasy. - Peter Sheehan, Australian Catholic Office for Film and Broadcasting

Opinion - God is without circumference
His challenge was to see the beauty in every face, even when the owner of that face had long given up on it. Surely, that is to love others as Jesus did—Jesus the One who never gives up on us. If we are to love as Jesus loved, we need to be forgiving people. Forgiving people are bridge-builders and reconcilers. - Fr Chris Gleeson, Madonna

OPINION
Beyond knowledge to wisdom
I believe this is one of the crisis points for contemporary Christianity. Put bluntly, its representatives do not seem wise. Yes, those representatives can give you any amount of information, some of them can even speak knowledgeably of Christian teachings. Wisdom is another thing altogether. - Fr Michael Whelan [More] - Aquinas Academy

Connected across borders
It is time for leaders of nations to see their national interests as connected with the interests of people on the other side of the globe. We have reached the point where human existence is at stake and our destiny is inextricably linked. If we are to overcome this crisis of climate change we need to think beyond the confines of national states. - Just Comment [More] - Edmund Rice Centre

Mary MacKillop ´patron of the fair go´

In a message for today's feast of Blessed Mary MacKillop, Josephite Congregational Leader Sr Katrina Brill has described her as 'one of our Australian heroes', whose life story "embodies characteristics which are integral to the Australian identity".

The focus of today's celebrations will be at Mary MacKillop Place at Mount Street, North Sydney, where Mary MacKillop died on 8 August 1909. Masses will be celebrated at Mary MacKillop Place at 9.30am, 10.30am, 11.30am, 12.30pm, 1.00pm, 2.00pm and 7.30pm.

"Mary's Feast Day provides all Australians with an opportunity to stop and reflect on the meaning of life," said Sr Katrina. "Mary MacKillop, an Australian by birth, stands out as one of our Australian heroes."

She added that Mary's life story embodies characteristics which are integral to the Australian identity.

"... A sense of a fair go for everyone, her willingness to stand on the side of people who are vulnerable, her pioneering spirit and her ability to respect people from across all beliefs and cultures."

Sr Katrina said that Mary would look for the good in others and assist children and people to feel good about themselves.

"She avoided being judgmental and cynical no matter what the situation and tried always to be ‘big hearted' and be ‘with' the people in their struggles."

Sr Katrina said the celebration of Mary MacKillop’s life calls us at this time to be people of hope in our broken and fragmented world.

"The celebration of her Feast Day challenges each Australian to know the God who is with us, to embrace with a compassionate heart those who travel the journey with us and to believe that each person can and does make a difference in our world."

As has been the custom, Mary MacKillop Memorial Chapel will be open all day (9.00am to 8.00pm) to allow the public to visit Mary MacKillop’s Tomb. School students will provide entertainment from 10.30am in the grounds, food and refreshments will be available, and Mary MacKillop Place Museum and Shop will be open from 10.00am to 5.00pm.
