Catholic women in Australia tell stories in new anthology
Catholic women from across Australia are sharing their deepest stories of faith and spirituality in a new anthology which is being billed as a "love story between Australian women and the Eternal Lover".
The book, entitled And the Dance Goes On, is to be launched around the country in October and November.
It is an initiative of the Commission for Australian Catholic Women (CACW) and grew from a desire to hear more of the anecdotes provided by women for the 1999 research report, Woman and Man: One in Christ Jesus.
CACW Executive Officer Therese Vassarotti writes in the introduction to the book that the stories chosen for the anthology were selected from many submitted in response to an invitation by the CACW.
"This is a love story, and like all love stories it is the stuff of life," she writes.
"What makes it different is that it is the love story of contemporary Australian women and the Eternal Lover. Here you will find stories of loving and laughing, longing and sometimes languishing.
"The stories tell something of what it means to be a Catholic woman today. They grapple with the question of the relevance of Catholicism as women continue to seek meaning and growth in Love's embrace."
The anthology is graced with a forward written by Lady Helen Deane who reminds the readers that Jesus was a teller of stories. Rather than merely preach sermons, he held his listeners by teaching and enriching them with narrative.
"And the Dance goes on is a collection of stories of Australian women whose lives have intersected with those earlier stories that Jesus lived, and told," she said.
